So I started taking my jeep apart last night and noticed the frame wasn't quite as solid as i thought.
You can't really tell from the picture but the frame is rotted from the wheel back. I have a few ideas on how to fix it but am not positive as to how i will do it. The project started as a close to stock wheeler but everyday it turns more into a buggy project.
Oh well the build must go on.

Find another junk frame that is good in the rear and weld them together, thats what we did to firefighter mike's cj6 frame except we did it to the front of the frame.

I am not too far from you, and I have a very nice cj5 frame that I'd sell. Please send me a private message if interested.

Thanks for all the offers guys. Unfortunatly I can't travel that far to pic up a frame. I am not completely sure on how I am going to fix it but I am thinking about cutting off the bad parts and replacing it with 2x4 or 2x6 square stock. I'm even thinking about rebuilding the entire rear section out of 2x6 tubing.

I will post some pics when I get a chance to have a try at fixxing. I have access to welder so whats the worst that can happenR)

I repaired the last 8" of mine on each side. Cut out the bad metal, rebuilt the frame, then added a reinforcement.

(ignore those first few pics unless you're interested in drilled drums ;) )

Here's a pic of the rebuilt section, with some steel from tractor supply, before adding the reinforcement:

2x6 is a bit of overkill.

I cut the back 18 inches off my CJ7 and used 4 pieces of 3x1/4 bar to make a box frame, just cause it was handy. I would use 2x3 11ga. at the most for that portion of frame. It will be alot stronger than original.
If you go bigger you still have a weak spot where they are joined so overkill warrents you nothing in this case.

I have a '64 frame that you can have after I tear the rears out of it, if you want it. The rear of the frame is very solid. actually the whole frame is pretty good. I'm not that far from you, I could even meet you around the Vestal area if you want. Send me a PM if your interested.

So today I took measurments and I think I am going to cut off the rear prtion of the frame that is bad and slide new rectaingle tubing over the existing good frame weld it in place. I have read that you should patch frames with diamand pieces so I am going to cut v shapes out of the end to give it more welding surface.
Can anybody think of anything I am missing or that I should do that I am not. The spring hangers will be replaced with buggy springs and I will make a custom crosmember with the shockmounts in the middle. Let me know if i missed anything. Thanks
