The PO+1 sprayed over the original paint & over everything - all hardware. What is the best to losen these up before beginning with the impact driver? Lacquer thinner, Liquid Wrench? TIA

A light hit with a hammer usually knocks the paint off.

I used a big hammer at about a gallon of aerokroil. I removed my last old rusted bolt about three months ago, and my fingernails have just about grown back from all the broken bolt smashes R) .

depending on the thickness of paint, just use a socket and a hand ratchet.

 I have no shame in breaking them if I have to, or taking an angle grinder to 'em. If they round off right away, I'll find a metric socket that's a scosh smaller, and employ a BFH :)smash: ) to hammer it on. Then use either a socket wrench or breaker bar and Vwaaala!! :smash:

Thanks to all - what about screw heads, like those on the windshield frame to the tub or holding on side mirrors? Tentative about the impact driver around the glass up there.

Dunno about the screws (still kinda working that one myself) but just another suggestion about the bolts. Craftsman (and I'm sure some other brands) have these "rusted nut and bolt removers" that are sorta like sockets, but with sharp edges that dig into the bolt. I have a nice set of these, and to date they have never, I repeat NEVER failed to get out a nut or bolt that was in my way. Period. One of the most useful tools I have ever owned.

From experiance, take a scribe or an awl to scratch out the paint.

Works on an F-16 fighter plane........worked on the CJ-7 too:D

Brian just did a product review on them. Personally when you get an old Jeep they should come with a set of the craftsman bolt removers.

I use one of these hand-impact drivers for phillips and torx bolts all the time. Soak generously with aerokroil or PB Blaster for a coupla hours and voila!

I got the Craftsman hand-impact driver but didn't see the torx attachments - just phillips & standard screwdriver. Guess I'm heading back to Sears! Thanks to all the replies.

I've always been able to remove my round head type bolts with a pair of vicegrips  Although I may have been close to braking the vicegrips with the pressure you have to clamp down on them, They haven't failed me yet...

I have found that a 1/4 inch rachet with a short screwdriver blade works well on the screws around the windshield. It give good leverage (better than a straight driver) without the chance of ruining the screw head.
