I have a new mechanical oil pressure gauge. Should I bleed all the air out of it after installing for accurate readings?

no need to bleed them, but you can if you want to i guess.

It silly question I guess, but the plastic tube is mostly full of air, only dotted with oil, so I was wondering about it.

The air will transfer the pressure to the gauge just as well as oil.

Air is compressible, oil is not. However, the amount of air that is in the line, and the accuracy factor of the guage enter into the equation as well. Bottom line IMHO is that that amount of air doesn't make a durned bit of difference.

FWIW, we have the same issue on our fire trucks every day. Our nozzles need 100 PSI minimum to protect our guys on the hoseline, and the gauges on the pump panel bounce all around, despite being liquid-damped. We simply don't have the time on every run to bleed the air out of the lines to get an 'accurate' gauge reading on every hoseline we have in operation.

The bottom line? Fuggetaboutit! :) If the oil pressure is a bit low on the gauge, whatchagonna do about it?

Could be electric instead of mechanical. In that case there will be a oil pressure sending unit with a single wire coming off of it and going to the guage.

:iagree: Either a bad sending unit or bad connection. If you want to switch to mechanical, there should be adapters that come with the guage that go in where the sending unit is.

The sender is on the right side of the timing cover next to the filter. See if it is electric or mechanical.

Its a mechanical guage that has a little straw that stick out from the firewall into the engine compartment about 12" not enough to get to the front of the engine.
