If you would please direct you attention to the picture above, you will notice that there's something not quite right about everyone of those brake parts, and you might also note that I am in a brake nightmare...

Well, I'm not exactly sure what failed first, I think it was the retaining pin, I only found one of them when I took it apart, I found the aduster in the area by the wheel cylinder, along with the clip for the same... the metal plunger was located down where the adjuster screw normal occupies. The backer plate is also bent about a centemiter back from where it should be on the rear part :( By the way, this is the rear pass brake drum, I got home on the front brakes...

Does anyone know what might have really happened? and did anyone save the pieces to their 10 inch brakes when they did the 11 in brake converson they would be willing to sell me? Thanks

Let me know what you need, I do still have some of the 10" parts.

I mainly need the 3 pieces to the aduster screws, and the little retaining pins, one was lost and the other was bent. I think I can bend the backer plate back and the wheel cylinder is going back to autozone to be replaced. Thanks,

I'm still in need of a right hand aduster screw, and some retaining pins.

Oh, and has anyone had something like this happen to them before?

I have seen damaged adjusters like that, and presumed it was from (sorry) improper assembly, sp. adjuster installed backwards.

Nope, it certainly wasn't installed backwards. it would be kinda hard if your observant, the hole in the backer plate is offset towards once side. The damage to this adjuster screw was caused by its rather violent trip to the top of the brake drum when it got free somehow. I'm not ruleing improper assembly out. But I don't think that's what caused this... It was working great until something gave out... although I can't for the life of me figure out what could happen in a space that closed up that would let the aduster loose... In order for that to have happened the two pads had to split far enough appart to allow the ajuster to jump its holds. Which seems kinda hard when everything is tucked inside the drum keeping it in. This is going to bug me until I figure it out.

I went to the garage and started playing out senerios with the pieces by placing them inside the drum and seeing how much room was available. With everything setup correctly, there is not enough room for the adjuster to come loose even with it rotated all the way in. However, I think I may have come up with a senerio that makes since and is physicaly possible. The main pieces I'm going to be talking about are the shoes, the adjuster, and the two metal pieces on top that fit over the pin. Normally the shoes push against the squarish metal peice to keep it from rotating with the drum. However, It is possible for the shoe to push its way inbetween the two pieces of metal, rotating it clockwize enough to break the retaining pin and free the adjusting screw, I also relized the aduster screw actually turned around inside the drum with enought force to bend that insainly thick backer plate. I whacked that thing with a 10# hammer and it just laughed at me... I guess it can stay bent...

Just curious - you don't show or mention the adjuster spring that attaches to the lower holes in the shoes. Was it still attached and holding the shoes together? :?

Hi AirForceKnight, I'd like to venture a guess....

Referring to the labeled pic below, here's a theory:

Somebody installed the star adjuster on A instead of B. Since there's no secure "notch" for A as there is B, the installer had to find a spot to stick the starwheel, and it probably migrated to one side over the life of the brake job which explains why that end of the shoe is twisted.

The result of such a mis-installation would predictably widen-out the brake shoes (pads) on at the lower end, thus stretching out/bending the securing pins (D) and, upon applying the brake, the drum only contacts & wears out the brake shoes at that lowermost segment of the shoes (C) at that extreme wear pattern/angle.

Again, just a guess. I'm too embarassed to comment on why this could be a possibility...
Better check your other wheels. :D
