I presume it has the same problem as the T-90 when it pops out. The bushing inside of 2nd gear wears, and then the gear skews on the shaft. This pushes the synchro sleeve away from the dogs on the gear, and the gear disengages. The synchro hub or sleeve can also be worn. There's some discussion of this on the Novak site (not much more than I've written here though). http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/t90_rebuild.htm

For the T-90, you replace the whole gear, but there must be some way to rebush the existing gear. I expect you can also use gears from a later T-14 (from behind a 232 or 258) if you need a new gear.

I had my syncro changes which did not fix the problem and then I had them take out the tranny to check the shifter adjustment, sycro-clutch wear, check gear teeth, etc.

It ended up being that the upper shift plate springs and bearings are worn, so the spring did not have enough tension to hold the gear in place. You can take it apart and put new springs in or buy a used plate complete. i bought mine on Friday from a yard in N.H. 802-754-2978. Ask for Glenn. He said he had a bus load of transmissions.

I went through something like this on a four-speed, spent mega-bucks (!) with Jeep and transmission "experts" with no improvement.

Finally turned out to be the bell-housing was not concentric in-line with the clutch/driveshaft. Caused the gears to "walk" out of engagement.

I fixed it permanently using a dial indicator and a shim (made of beercan) between the bellhouse and the engine.

    Good luck,

    Pete

I already thought of the T-90 scenerio so I replaced second gear last time I had the tranny out. I didn't take the shifter cover apart so maybe I'll try that. Thanks guys.

May want to give it a try. I had the same problem with the T14 that I swapped in and it turned out to be the shifter. Good luck.

Finally found the problem. When I rebuilt the tranny I crossed the the clutch sleeves. I had the first/reverse one where the second/third should be and visa versa. Finally looked at a picture in the FSM and there it was. Duh!!
