What hub is this? :? It says Warn Locking Hub with "Lock" and "Free" on the outer ring where you turn the selector.

I beleive it is a loc-o-matic. As far as the internals are concerned they are the same as the one pictured. Some had "Loc-o-matic" on them some didn't.

Kind of like the "selectro" argument, some said "sears" or "ward" or "selectro". The same hub just labeled differently.

I have Warn premium hubs on my 5 and they look like the one pictured above. I do not have a sprague clutch internal in my hubs. The sprague clutch is what makes for the lock-o-matic feature, if the axle trys to spin faster than the wheel the spragues automaticly lock the hubs. In my opinion its to much monkey motion for my tastes so I will stick with my premiums, I think most of the lock-o-matics were on Scouts, thats if my memory serves me correctly. Mike

Nope that's not a lock-o-matic. Looks like one though. The middle piece between the cap and the hub isn't thick enough. Just a standard locking hub. Should work just fine for you though.

I think they came in the same size housing and I also think the dial is the same size so if thats all true I wonder if a dial from a premium would work in a lock-o-matic? I guess the only real way to tell then would be the 10 sided nut they used for the sprauge to work.

Just out of curiosity if the distance of the center block changed would this not require a different length outer shaft or am I thinking wrong here?:? I guess the ones I have dissassembled must have had parts swtiched around at some point with loc-o-matics. I was just looking through some of my spare parts and all I have is lock-o-matics. I think I may have a set of "locking hubs" in the shed I will have to take a look at them tonight and compare. I always thought they were the same.

Nope. The only difference was in the hub assembly, not in the axle length. IMHO the Lock-O-Matics tended to look funky and get caught up offroad on rocks and such on CJs. All the ones I ever saw here in PA when I was growing up were on wagons and pickups. Consider them the "saber-toothed" version of "automatic" all-wheel-drive. ;)

Mine are lock-a-matics and they do appear to stick out more.

FWIW, they have gotten me into a couple of bad situations in the past. Basically, I throw 615 into 4-wheel-low at the beginning of a trail and all is peachy because I have lock-a-matics. :driving: Then deep into the trail I'm in a downhill situation where engine-braking is important. For those of you that don't know, unless manually locked, the lock-a-matic only gives you forward thrust. So I have to ride my brakes until I get to a flat spot where I can get out and lock my hubs like I should've done to begin with, grumbling to myself the whole way. The sad thing is this has happened to me more than once. You would think I'd learn.

The hubs on my cj-5 look identical to yours but mine say I.H. instead WARN. Mine are not loc-o-matics. I have an extra set I could disassemble and post pics of. I have never posted pics befor so it could take awhile. Anyhoo the internals on my hubs pretty simple no springs or clutches.
