    Whats a new L-Head engine worth, ???

Brand new Still in the crate and wrapped in the cloth sack with Aluminum foil backing with inserts in the spark plug holes that prevent dampness from entering,, it's a military crate,, late forties I think???

I'm not interested in selling,,just wondering about dollar value ??

    Thanks

Probably most depends on whether it's a military engine or civilian. A WAG? If it's a complete engine, at least $1000, probably more.

I wouldn't want to sell it either if it was mine. Can you post some pictures of it, including the head, distributor, etc. Prefix of the serial number will also tell what it is. I'd love to see it just to drool. :hurrican:

Did they have aluminum foil in the 40's?

Aluminum foil started replacing tin foil around 1910, with the changeover pretty much complete before WWII.

As to the value of the engine, it would depend on the local market. If this was an original 40's "crated" factory engine, I would have it appraised by an automotive museum, prior to pulling it from the crate. If it's a depot or private rebuild, I would price it at $1000-$1500. A used, running L-head goes for about $500 around these parts. Low mileage can add to the value (hard to prove!); a tired, leaky engine will sell for much less.

If it is an NOS MB/GPW engine it would sell for $3000-3500. If it is an NOS M38 engine around $1500, if it is a CJ engine around $1000-$1500 as long as it is brand new and not a rebuild

Do you have a casting number on this engine?

I would think it would be worth more crated to a collector than as a new running uncrated motor.

The key would be to leave it crated. It is worth more. But you still need to try to get the numbers off it to varify what jeep it was meant for

I think it is orignal,, late 40's or possibly early 50's,, the crate is unopened and has Air Force markings

The engine is not Equipped with a carb, Gen or starter,, If memory serves me correct it does have exhaust & intake manafolds, oil filter and for sure flywheel that is tapped for clutch & pressure plates

I bid and won two crate engines from a surplus auction put on by the city of Dickson Tn. I have opened one crate and sold that engine to a Canadian Flat fender fan,, though I have grossly under priced it,, the remaining engine and the trip is paid for

I'm searching for the Pics I took of the one I previously sold,,didn't have any luck locating them last night

Send me the NSN number and I'll check my NOS Air Force M38 Parts Manual and see if it's listed.
