On what engine? Best move I ever did was replace the YF with a Motorcraft 2100 on my 258. Cheap, easy as pie to rebuild, and the adapters/linkage is a piece of cake. mmmmm pie, cake.............

I have a 258 six and if I could do it over again, I'd go with the motorcraft 2100. It's cheaper, easier and seems to run better from what I've heard.

replaced the 1bbl on my 258 with the WEBER K551-38/38. What a difference! No experience with MC 2100 but I couldn't be happier with ease of install and power after. Not sure about gas milage, but then, that wasn't the reason to shift carb.

How do you put a 2100 on a 258? Is that the same carb on the 304? Where do you get the manifold?

I Rebuilt my YF, took my time and made sure all the passages were blown out, used a quality kit, replaced the choke spring and the accel pump. Before I rebuilt it ran so rich it burned your eyes, would not come off the fast idle cam, backfired and just sucked. Now it is smooth as silk. I am still fiddling with it of course. You can get a newly rebuilt one for like $150 with your core. Its cheap, keeps it stock and since this carb was used since the 40's it has to be somewhat decent. My $.02. However if the 2100 is the 304 carb it is better.

To put a 2100 on a 258, you need the 2-bbl manifold, then an adapter from Mr Gasket for about $20. After that it's a matter of attaching the linkage, a little fabbing of linkage connectors. The 2100 works great in offcamber situations.
There is a HUGE amount of info on the net about 2100s for 258s. Search Jeepsunlimited.com forums, CJoffroad.com, jeepforum.com, etc. Use Motorcraft 2100 swap as your search criteria.
If you still need more info, I collected a bunch of posts from different forums a few years back, and archived them. I'll send to you if you like.

EDIT: Yep, the 2100 is the carb on the 304, and dozens of Ford applications as well. You want the one designated with 1.08 in the circle, embossed on the carb body.

I have the MC2100 on my 258. My original cast-iron 2V manifolds had some problems, so I used manifolds from an '85 258 CJ. The '80 or later intake is aluminum, and the exhaust is cast iron. Both are much smoother than the '79 or earlier cast iron manifolds. The later manifolds replace the exhaust flap carb preheater with an electric heater in the base of the intake manifold. You can either do without the carb heater (my choice) or rig a relay connected to engine temp that controls the carb preheater.

The 80-on manifolds mostly bolt on - I had to notch my power steering bracket slightly to clear, but all the threaded holes are the same. Be sure to get the accelerator cable brackets and bellcrank with your intake manifold.

Then the 2100 is an easy bolt-on; you need to make a plate that bolts on to the carb linkage so that the linkage pulls down instead of back, and buy the cheesey 2V adapter from Summit, Jegs, etc. - or if you have access to a machine shop, make one.

You can mount the MC2100 to your original 1V manifold, but there's probably not a lot of advantage to this over the original Carter YF carb.

Lynn. I will take the info about the 2100. I just bought another cj. This one is a 83 cj7 with the 304. It has a bum carb and I am looking for info.
    Thanks

I've read a lot of good stuff about the MC2100 on the 258. I just did that conversion on my 80 CJ-5 and it runs like crap. Hard starting when warm--acts like it's flooded. I checked for vacuum leaks and there doesn't seem to be any. Checked to see if the choke is sticking, it isn't. I noticed that it has #48 jets in it. Maybe it doesn't like my DUI HEI distributor. Well, back to more troubleshooting.
