Is a 225 better than a 231?

Is there any reason a 231 odd fire is inferior to the 225 odd fire? I've done some reading on it, but still not clear. I have an opportunity to buy a 231 odd fire to replace a worn out 225 that is currently in my MB. Any reason I should stay away from the 231? I think everything should bolt up o.k. Both engines are mated with T-90 tranny. I've noticed that the long block price for a rebuild runs about $400 more for the 225. Because it's better - or just supply and demand?
Thanks. (Not sure if this is the correct location for this thread.)

    Nothing I can think of.

Other than a 231 EF is hard to find w/ a flywheel. But since this is an OF 231 then you're set in that respect.

Actually I've been told just the opposite, 231OF is the better motor. Just not sure why.

Actually the 225 has better rockers than the 231 motors, the 231 used stamped rockers instead of cast units that are found on the 225. The oiling system on both motors with the exception of the rockers are the same until you get to the even fire motors. When all things are equal as far as being in good shape the 225 will always run cooler with less chance of overheating than the 231 simply because it has more water passages in the motor and a higher capacity in the block. The later rods on the 231 oddfire are stronger but can be swapped to the 225. The 231 can run higher lift cams due to the lifter area having more material then the 225 and the 231 also also has gussets to strengthen the lifter valley. The 231 uses cam bearings that are all the same size rather than progressively smaller bearings like the 225. The 231 should have hardened exhaust seats for running unleaded fuel, the 225's while it can be installed never had it from the factory.
Most differences are minor and for a low speed Jeep engine wouldn't make much difference

Excellent information gentlemen! Thank you. It's just curious to me why a rebuilt 225 cost so much more?

I am currently putting a 231 oddfire in place of my 225 with a cracked block. I have a lot of pics if you are interested including the stamped steel rocker mentioned above. The 231also has a small traight segment on the valve cover which makes the 225 valve covers not interchange. I went with the 225 intake and have not run into any problems yet. If you want the pics just send me your email address. enatman33@yahoo.com.

Thanks enattrass. I'll save your info and contact you when I get to that point. I haven't got the engine yet. Based on the feedback from the group, I'll go ahead and get it. It will be a complete engine with all the accessories except for the carb. It will have a manifold on it for a 4 barrel so I'll be looking for advice on a good carb. Back in my earlier Jeepin days (15 years ago) Carter was the one to have because of the side mounted float, but I'm sure there are a lot of good choices out there now.

Parts availability and demand primarily. I'd agree with everything McRuff said. Rockers are the weak point on the 231 but as long as the oiling system is in good shape (make sure the oil is clean and or changed regularly), either one will make a fine Jeep motor. Nickmil.
