Has anyone done this swap before??

A friend of mine has a 1963 CJ5 with the stock engine (F134) and we are trying to install a Low Granny transmission. What seems to mock up better (transmission - tcase adapting wise) is the SM420.

We are trying to find any info on how to's for this swap.

    Any help will be appreciated!!

It seems that a factory T-98 behind the F-head w/ 5.38's at the corners should get you the desired crawl ratio.

I'm just shootin from the hip though.

Maybe shoot an email to Novak to see what they think. I would love to see the 420 to Fhead. The T98 to Fhead is great but an option that is highly desireable and sort of rare at times. I would say try th eGM route.

I've taken some measurements, found that the bolt circle fits just inside the chevy bellhousing. The bellhousing will have to be trimmed back beause of the starter location. Made some sketches and took them by a machinist friend and he saw no raeson why it wouldn't work. He was going to make an adapter ring to bolt to the 134 block and chevy bellhousing. Use the Jeep flywheel and make a pilot bushing to fit on the 420 shaft.

420 is 1/2 shorter but but remember the F head will fit up inside a chevy bellhousing. Should be able to take that up with an adapter ring of some type and a buhing on the input shaft to fit in the crank. With the help of a guy at NAPA here that I've known a while we came up with a clutch that was 9" ten spline 1 1/8 shaft.

written down in a green spiral notebook.....That I can't get any longer. But I can remeasure the parts.(I have them) I figure I can go back to NAPA and find the application. Which I will do before I start on the flatty. Once I get the 5 runnin again.

this was posted on pirate and i suggested using a 420 out of a large truck, i have one that has a input shaft size of 2'' thick and about 10'' long, this would work if needed to cut a new shaft, you would have to allow for a one thick adapter made out of ALU but i think it would be the cheapest way, jason.

I know its not what want to do but i am in the process of finishing my t18 swap behind my f134. the t18 i found was easier than the sm420 swap due to being able to retain my d18 and offset d44. i used my stock t90 bellhousing and had an adapter plate machined by a local company.

a coiuple of shots of the jeep in process

That is SWEEET!!! Also, keep a list of the parsts you used, that is an excellent setup, if you cant get the T98. What input shaft is the T18? Is it the novak shaft?
