I looked into this option, but decided a T-98 and Warn OD worked better. The good news is that the Clarke is about 3" shorter than an NV4500. Huge in the other two dimentions though. They use something like a 1.5" input shaft. Lots of different gear sets available, including some with overdrive. Others had really deep granny gears (like 8:1). They were used in large trucks behind small and big block chevys, so you could use factory parts to bolt it to one of those, but you're on own for pretty much anything else. There is one company out there (Performance Gear in MS) that makes an adapter to the D300, but I'm not sure if they are still in business. They may have other adapters as well. I used to see their ads in the magazines, but I don't recall seeing one lately.

    What about an NV3550?

Someone on WT was just asking about one in a 2A with a turboed L-head. Not built yet but that was the plan.

I believe it has the same length problems as the other options, plus it also requires a round pattern transfer case.

I'll have to go look up that thread.

I run the t18, warn od, and 4.88 gears. The od is a 25% overdrive, or multiply your axle gears by .75 (same thing). With 4.88s and the t18 I have a 75 to 1 crawl, and when shifted into overdrive its like having 3.66 gears. With 30" tires the lowlow is awesome, and in overdrive it can go faster than I am comfortable with. Best of both worlds.

My only complaint is on longer trips my gas mileage sucks. Would like to reduce my highway rpms just a little more. Going to 4.27 gears would be one answer, but wouldn't be worth the money and effort to me. The other answer would be to go to a 31" tire to reduce highway rpms just a little more. That is what I will probably do when these 30s wear out.

It's from a TJ I thought? While we're dreaming there's lots of transfer cases that would bolt up to that anyway. ;)

Yeah, but a TJ has what, a 13" longer wheelbase than a CJ5? Ever seen the stock rear driveshaft on a TJ? It's shorter than my rear driveshaft, and I've got a CJ3A.

As far as transfercases go, yeah there's a few that will bolt up, but none have an offset rear drive, so you'd need a new rear axle, and other than the Dana 300, they're all driver's drop front. Of course it does open the door for an Atlas or Stak case.

I had a TJ up until a couple weeks ago, I've seen the rear DS. I've also seen a TH400 in a CJ-5, the rear DS was a slip joint and that was it. Anything's possible. :p

Possible, but far from ideal. Maybe it's just me, but I just don't think any 5 speed out there is worth it over a warn OD.

Probably not. I didn't say it was. I was just throwing out ideas since that's what was asked. Personally I'd take a Warn OD myself too. :p

Okay, Okay - I'll forget the 5 speed and go for a warn. I e-mailed Herm about pricing, waiting to hear back. Like I said before, this CJ-5 I have has 2 levers next to the trans shifter. To my knowledge, all CJ-5's (at least with the 225) were single lever transfer cases, so this thing may have an OD already. Hard to tell since it's parked in the weeds with 2 flat tires right now, but I'll take a look thhis weekend. I'm not holding my breath though

Are they side by side? If the third lever is to the left of your transmission shifter then it's an OD, if they're short and side by side to the right of the transmission shifter then they're twin sticks.

How close are the levers together? If they are right next to each other, then I'd say you have a twin stick transfer case. If they are not next to each other then I'd say you have a single stick t-case and an OD.

Edit: Guess I should have looked at the next page before posting.

I don't think they were too close together, but then again I didn't take a lot of notice. I'm about to head over there now and take a peak...

Ok, so there's no OD on the jeep - it just has a 2 stick transfer case, which I still think is odd. Herm e-mailed me back and the OD (rebuilt) with the all the linkages and shipping is around $730. Not too bad really.
