well i cranked it over again and got the timing set down and the idle running good. it still seems to have a miss, but i think it might be rough by design. But i have a few questions

    1. Will the lifter noise go away when they get enoguh oil. I did dd oil to the lifters when i installed them (new) but i can hear them or something clacking away. It seems to have gotten a bit better.

    2. i have what seems to be a vaccum leak, but cant find it, no oil leaks and the carb cleaner doesnt make it idle better. given it may be that my ear is right next to the air cleaner opening so i think it may be me over thinking stuff. Just trying to get used to the motor again.

Are you saying that you did bleed the lifters with fresh engine oil before installing them, if you did not that will make the lifters clatter and can sound bad.

i did add oil and used the pushrod to bleed them, not sure if i did it correctly.

    What i did was
    place the new lifter upright
    add oil to the top
take a pushrod and cycle it through

Thats about it. Billy said to add oil to it, but i didnt know bout anything else. none of the books i had made any reference to bleeding the lifters

You should put the lifters in a shallow pan or can. Add oil just over the tops of the lifters. Then use a push rod to bleed off the air. Oil enters the lifters from the side and exits thru the top. The noise should go away after a while. Hows the oil pressure?

Used to run a little ATF upon startup seems to quiet them down quickly. I was changing oil at 500 miles anyway.

Those lifters will pump up Dan..... Just don't let the motor turn too fast until they do....
