Duraback still looks smoother than Herc in your pics Thad.

Smooth version cost more but might be worth it.

I've considered a Tan color for the 416.

Wow, there's nothing like being the last one to show up at a party. ;)

I stripped down my tub earlier this week, then spent the last couple days applying Hurculiner via the rolling method. After 48 hours of curing time, I couldn't help noticing that the surface of the stuff came out pretty rough, not rough like sandpaper, but very uhhh...bumpy?

Even my wife mentioned that it looks like it's going to be a pain to keep mud and other debris from building up in certain areas.

HOWEVER :D I'm thinking about running what's left of the Hurculiner through a strainer, then applying the paste to some of the crevice areas with a paintbrush, maybe that'll smooth things out a bit.

Used the Duraback and like it. I like the idea of the smooth, must have come out recently. I called and talked to them a while back to order smooth. Gonna use on outside but still a ways a way. But I like the idea. They say you can spray with regular gun instead of the undercoating gun like I used for the textured stuff. Bet I don't use my HLVP though.

I went with Durabak: tan for the interior and forest green for the undercoating. I'm not concerned about resale value; Timgr does have a point about that. The texture is probably rough enough to trap dirt in the crevices, but that's why I bought tan. Herculiner is like 80 grit, Rhino isn't DIY, carpet gets stinky, and paint wears too quickly in the cargo area.

I'm thinking the smooth duraback for interior and rough stuff (maybe herculiner?) for undercoating. Figure a rough undercoat will hide any marks and dings from chucked rocks, etc. Not worried as much about cleanliness there!! :D

Go with a Fiberglass body then you already have a rough surface on the bottom of the jeep. ;)

    Hi guys,
I am brand new to the site so let me say hello from South Carolina first!
I Rino'd the interior of my CJ-3A years ago with disasterous results, not enough prep 1st and the Rust under the liner almost destroyed the body.
I had merely sanded and primered the bad spots per the distributers directions and soon noticed "bubbles" of rust under the liner.
A long story short the liner came out' sandblasted and p.o.r 15 and Rhino replaced the liner for free. but it dosen't stick very well to the scuffed up p.o.r. so be very careful of the prep before lining with anything.
in hindsight I would have spent the hours on a nice coat of paint and not used any liner at all.
Going to pick up a new to me 62 CJ5 tomorrow so I am sure to be here often.
    Donnie

So what exactly is the different between smooth Durabak and automotive paint? Is it still a thick, "rubbery" coating like Rhino but with a smooth surface? Just checking because there is nothing wrong with the existing interior color, but I am interested in something more durable and 'thicker' for the sound dampening.

Oh, FYI, my jeep body is one of those after-market METAL tubs and the underside and interior appears to be a 'baked on' black finish.

It lacks the "granules" that they put in regular Durabak.

OK... that gets me part of my answer but I don't know about Durabak, in general. I know the Rhino in my truck bed was quite thick and appeared 'rubber-like'. Is Durabak basically the same?

It's a roll on/spray on bedliner like Rhino. Unless you spray it on it won't be as thick most likely though.

Isn't there a brand of this stuff that has rubbery granules? Or is it all rubbery?

Oh, and Durabak sends free "samples" of the end product.

Herc has it on the box. You can find a display in most of your FLAPS.

I know the stuff I got from Wal*Mart (don't laugh) and it had ground up tire bits in it.

Worked ok for the price ($40/gal), but was VERY thin and as soon as it had a scratch in it (which admittedly took almost a year, and was the result of a transmission rolling around in bck), it started coming off quick. Did not adhere to the metal well at all. I wouldn't recommend it....

    Friendly local auto parts store.

Of course, depending on your relationship with the flaps, the F may change to another "f" word.....

Has anybody used the duplicolor product.
It looks to be pretty decent and I thought about using it after I paint my Jeep in a month or 2.
