 So... this guy I bought Bella from had a painless wiring harness put on it... very half-***. The speedometer works, the oil pressure works, voltage works, BUT the gas gauge and the water do not. I see where the wire was clipped on the water, but I can't find where the fuel gauge use to hook up. Can anyone lead a blindman? Thanks.

Stock '75 CJ there is one wire from the sending unit heading toward the LR taillight then up into the tub. This is a small pink wire that goes to the gas gauge. Is this what you're looking for?

You need to run a switched 12V+ to the correct terminal on your temp gage, then hook a test light to the pink fuel gage wire. If your sending unit works, you will get a pulsing test light. If you hook up the pink wire to proper terminal on the fuel gage & it stops working again, try running a ground to the fuel gage.

    ADDITIONAL NOTE:

The pink wire does not stay pink all the way to the tank.

Was that the factory set-up for the '74 304's in your photo? It looks like a custom installation to me, but I'm not big on V-8's. There should still be a power & a pink wire to your fuel gage.

    I have Painless Instructions Manual #90504 - for installing 1. 12 circuit Jeep '74 & earlier & 2. for 12 circuit Jeep '75 & later * also the Chilton's manual for '53 to '79.

Check w/ Painless & see if this is the correct manual & get a replacement manual price. It may be cheaper to photocopy this one (29 pages).

I paid an auto electrical "expert" to solder all wires, no butt connectors & he goofed up mine also. I carry a magic marker and write down my mileage when i fill up. It helps whenever my fuel gage takes a vacation.

No, that's a custom installation. The '74 had the usual CJ speedo with fuel and temp in the dial, and optional oil pressure and volts (amps? not sure if they changed in '74 or '75) at 4 and 8 o'clock.

Re butt connectors, they are an excellent connection if they are done correctly with the right crimper. Cover with waterproof heat shrink (has goo on the inside) and you have a quality splice.

Because the guages are not stock I would check to make sure it is the correct guage for a stock jeep sending unit. Or, if the fuel sending unit has been replaced, check to make sure it is the correct one for the guage you have.

I know my fuel cell came with a GM sending unit. This uses a different resistance then the stock CJ sending unit. So I could not use the stock Jeep guage with my fuel cell.

When I converted to Fuel Injection, I ripped out all of the wiring and custom built my own harness. The existing wiring in the Jeep had been so hacked up it was not worth saving.

The fuel sending unit is a variable resistor that has a float attached to it on a arm. As the liquid level in the tank changes so does the resistance.

It will be on top of the fuel tank close to if not at the same place the fuel line hooks up to the tank. You may have to drop the tank to get to it. If the wiring is close to what My 72 had then you should have a harness running down the drivers side frame rail. There will be one wire running up to the top of the fuel tank from this harness at the rear of the jeep. I beleive the sender is grounded through the tank and frame but there may be a second ground wire coming from the sendor.

Try the quarter car wash to clean the underside. Lay on the ground with the wand and wear eye protection.

Good idea w/the heat shrink. I use it to fix my eyeglass earpieces when they break.
After 30 some odd years around heavy construction trucks and 20 around Harleys, I've actually found a good hand twisted connection w/marine liquid insulator works best.

My sending unit on my '74 has always had a ground wire to the frame as far as I know. I've found that an additional ground off of the gage itself helps sometimes.
I've also seen sending units break in a matter of weeks.

This is why I like to do my own stuff. Can't blame anyone but myself when its messed up. This is the wiring for my new dash panel..

And test fitting the new panel in the jeep.
