My Jeep quit starting the other day, so I took the starter off. I hooked it up to the battery and it is turning over, but not engaging ("popping-out"). Is there anything I can do to fix it?

I looked back through old posts and they said that for the 6 cylinder, starters were around $30. Everything I find on the internet for the F-head is over $200. I called NAPA and they said that one for an AMC 4 cylinder (the guy thought it MIGHT fit) was $78, but he didn't have one specifically for the Kaiser-Jeep that old.

Any ideas on where to get one for less? Or better yet, are there any magic tricks I can perform on this one? It seems to be in good shape as far as turning over and the condition of the gear.

    Thank ya'll (again),

I think your best bet is to find a local rebuilder and see what they can do with your existing unit. You might try another NAPA and see if you can find a guy that's willing to get out a book rather than just checking the computer.

A cruiser buddy of mine said that it could just be full of dirt. What makes the gear "pop-out"?

I've never been in one and am pretty much just ignorant about the mechanics of it.

IIRC last time this came up, I looked in the Napa Online catalog for a '71 CJ with a F134. They list rebuilts for ca $50 exchange. Their website seems to be broken right now, or else I'd give you a link.

yeah, I couldn't get the sight to work either. I may just take it by there next week if there is nothing ya'll can think of for me to try first.

I'd do what Joel said and try to find a good starter shop.

    Or buy the new bendix.

You may want to count the teeth on the ring gear and match the bendix to that.

I had just about the same problem. Took mine to a rebuilder and in about 30 minutes they installed new bendix. I do believe it cost me $35.00. It works like champ now.

I've had my bendix replaced like 4 times on my F-134...its like I'll be cruising right along on the highway and when I come off an exit to a stop the engine dies and then the starter doesn't work anymore. I wonder if my temp gauge is wrong and I'm over heating and locking the starter up.Luckly its easy to get at and has only 2 bolts. Any suggestions?

How fast are you going? I don't know how what you're saying could hurt the starter. Do you have a carb problem that's causing the engine to die?

No Glenn the carbs fine and runs great around town. I just keep breaking bendix's on my starter, and it seems to only happen after a long high speed drive on the highway at about 55 mph. After I come to a stop the engine dies and I can't restart. Every time it has been the starter breaking and the bendix needs replacing.

Those d*mn Bendixes (Bendices?) were trouble even when they were new. If you can order a '71 starter at your local Napa, take a look and see if it still uses a Bendix drive.

There's a pretty good section on starters and Bendix drives in my 1954 Motor's manual.

On Bendix drive starting motors, Figs 2 and 3, broken Bendix housings and wrapped up Bendix springs may result if the driver closes the starting switch during engine rockback after the engine starts and stops again.

Another cause may be engine backfire during cranking, which may result, among other things, from ignition timing being too far advanced.

To avoid such failures, the driver should pause a few seconds after a false start to make sure the engine has come completely to rest before another start is attempted. In addition the ignition timing should be reset if engine backfiring has caused the trouble.

Either that, or always park on a hill. ;)

I don't know...mine has like a cone over the bendix, will that one fit? I'm willing to try anything at this point tired of replacing bendixs. The starter solonoid for mine is on the firewall so this might work, although mine has been converted to 12v. Thanks for looking that up Glenn, you guys are a big help.

Hey guys thanks for all your help, took it to a starter shop and found out the last shop I took it too put in a very weak pin on the bendix. They replaced it with a Ford pin which is much thicker. He said the original pin is suppose to be a roled pin, if you look at the pin from the side it looks like its wound, like a spring. He said they are hard to get. Now I need a new battery...go figure, its been sitting for a year.
