1976 CJ5 Vehicle Weight

    A friend owns a 1976 CJ5 6 cyl and needs to tow it from Montana to CA. Any idea of the gross vehicle weight of this jeep? Thanks.

    May be on the title. The Technical Service Manual for a 1973 CJ5 shows 3750 GVW with a 258 I-6 and T-18 with all the options available at that time.

    What I would do is weigh it on a scale the way you’re going to tow it. You can find scales at the bone yard, trucking outfits and anywhere that weighs you before dumping waste.

    What is the letter after 83 in your friend’s v.i.n. that will identify the GVW?

    My '74 C-5 w/33X12.5X15's, L-6, cast iron trans., extra leaf springs, battery & 1/2 tank of fuel (+ wet) weighed 3520# at the concrete plant. That's close enough to the 3500# towbar limit for me.
    You'd be better off trailering or driving. Your front inner hub bolts (if you have them) will loosen up, etc. Count on at least 1 day going over everything after the tow. You must drop at least your rear drive shaft & keep everything level to a gnat's a** towing-wise. A few cutbacks will negate that.
    If you plan on renting a U-Haul tow dolley, keep in mind that they accept only standard size tires in the slots.

    Towed my '74 up to speeds of 70 mph with no problem behind the PATHFINDER. Just put everything in neutral or disengaged. Agree getting the tongue as close to level as possible, otherwise bad things can happen.

    I weighed my 1965 CJ5 with a V6 in it, full role cage, heavy duty rear bumper and warn overdrive and it scaled 2,750 lbs excactly. Mark
