As you may know I've been trying to improve my suspension and installed my new Rancho 9000's yesterday. Didn't do a damn bit of good so now it ought to be my springs that are too stiff. Any suggestions as to what springs I should go with? I believe the ones on there now have something like a 3" lift, forget.

Did you take the leaves out? If you haven't, I'd go ahead and try it. You can always put them back. Or else look for some take-offs from someboby else's lift and try those. You can use your main leaf and a mix of whatever else you can scrounge up.

I'd just hate to lose my heighth and it won't guarentee a better ride. It probably will be better but I have these speaker enclosures that my tires will hit if I lower it. http://www.wideopenwest.com/~kpasque/wheelwell.JPG

I don't know that you'd loose much height removing a spring.

As for a decent ride we gave you four suggestions. Holbrooks, Alcans, or Wrangler YJ springs of some flavor if you've got the $$ anything's possible.

I'm not sure what you think "decent " should be, but it is a short wheel base Jeep....
I've got Skyjacker softride springs on my '67, and as far as I'm concerned, it rides pretty smooth for an 81" wheelbase solid axle utility vehicle.....YMMV of course....

I also run the Skyjacker Softride 2.5" lift. It gives a very good ride, but is sensitive to heavy added weight over stock weight. Adding heavy rear bumper/swingout/big spare/hi-lift on the back, or a big winch up front, will cause it to sag over time since it is a fairly soft 4-leaf pack.

When I set my Rancho 9000s to 1 and run the trails, my rig rides as smooth, or smoother, than a stock TJ on the trails.
Those comments came from TJ owners who have ridden in or driven my rig :)

What brand springs are you running right now? Is yours a 4 leaf or 5 leaf pack?
Have you flexed them much/broken them in?
I know BDS is one brand that starts stiff but improves after a few trail rides with lots of flexing...

Lose the speaker cans. Use rollbar mounted speakers, cabinets on top of the wheelhouses, or headphones.

I think headphones violate some local ordinances, please check with the appropriate authorities before you try them. Sorry Tim, I hate to contradict you. Please consider it a clarification.

Looks like they are a five pack Lynn, here you go... don't look too closely you might get rust in your eye http://www.wideopenwest.com/~kpasque/frontleftspring.JPG
I know what you guys are saying about having your 6 x 9's over the wheelhouse instead of through it . Wish I would've done that :p
I'm not too worried about having large loads in this thing that would deteriorate a set of "soft ride" springs. As long as they make my ride bearable I'll be happy. Forgive me fellas but after each trip around the block with this thing I pee blood  Sorry. But guess I'll have to take this to the local spring place , MAN!! they are going to rape me.

CH, before you let them rape you... just get a price from them. Then call Bob Supplee
and see what he can do for you on a set of Skyjacker Softride, or whatever else you are interested in. Bob has treated our members here GREAT... his prices can seldom be beat by anyone. He's a one-man show with great service.

    His contact info is here:

Better to call than email... and if he doesn't answer, I know we're close to vacation time for him....

Yes, you're right - the big ear-covering cans will probably get you in trouble in some areas. However, there are all-in-the-ear buds available that are discreet if not legal everywhere. IIRC the safety hazard comes from not being able to hear the sirens of emergency vehicles. Not sure that cans are a lot worse than external speakers that are loud enough to overcome a Jeep's road noise... What? Did you say something? ;)
