If your top hose is cold when the engine is running chances are the thermostat is not opening.
Why doesn’t it open? There is a small cylinder that is filled with wax and it melts when the engine temp rises. A rod connected to the valve presses into the wax. When the wax melts, it expands and pushes the rod out of the cylinder, opening the valve. If you haven’t thrown your old thermostat away, just for kicks put it in a pot of water then let it boil, if it’s good it will open.

I guess I don't understand exactly how it could go bad. It makes sense how it works...Just don't know what part physically goes bad and how.

    Thanks

Well the thermostat closes when the vehicle is cool ( so I should say it starts off closed) As the motor warms up and the temperature reaches the predetermined temp it opens up and allows the cooler water to run thru the engine and push the hotter water out, Does this help. If it never opens, then the hot water is never pushed out of the engine and allowed to cool.

P.S. I gave away my complete fiberglass shroud

I never investigated a thermostat other then checking to see if it opens by putting it in a pot of water and bringing it to a boil. Did you do that? I can appreciate your need to know why and without being able to dig into your thermostat myself I would guess it’s the rod that opens the valve that has malfunctioned or the wax leaking out of the cylinder somehow. There isn’t much to them.

long story short...it was the thermostat...don't fully understand what could make it bad other than wax leaking or something but it is fixed.

Thank you very much everyone for your help.
