Starts with the air compressor in the rear, It is a Maltese Cross pump, purchased from Cando enterprises. (I don't think they are in business any more.) it ran for 23 yrs with out a problem. It gave issue in 22, and I've fixed it but have purchased a twin compressor pump and will install it when this pump fails again.

from the pump, a rubber hose runs to the pressure regulator under the hood. This is a standard Square D pressure reg for well pumps, and I've adjusted it to engage at 90 and disengage at 120 psi.

leaving the regulator there is a one way valve then to the 1st one gal air tank, under the battery, then to the larger tank.

which used to look like this

There is a pressure gauge on the dash

quick disconnect on the front bumper for an air hose and one in the back that goes to the roof for the air horns.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for sharing that info. My compressor is ViAir 325, I believe it runs up to 200psi and shuts off and on at 90psi. It is mounted to a 2gallon tank. My plan is to remove it from the tank so it can be mounted by itself. That spot behind the back seat looks ideal as there is not much room for anything bigger. I could possibly mount the air tank in there also. I always run these compressors with a 40amp circuit breaker, 10g wiring, 30amp fuse. I have two semi air tanks that I used to have on past trucks that I don't use/need anymore. They are about 36" long and about 10-12 inches around. I realize that I have plenty of pressure but short on volume to fill tires up unless I let it "recharge" the tank which is entirely doable.

You don't want to run a compressor without a tank unless it is designed to do so. The tank allows the air to cool, moisture can seperate, and allows the switch to cycle the pump without short cycling or exceeding duty cycle.

Not my plan to run without a tank. I am only separating the compressor from the tank to get it down to smaller footprint.

    Here is old school air.
AC pump on the stock AMC ac bracket.
Tucked my tank in the fender.
Air has easily access and with a dust cover.
One of these days i will clean up my wiring.

Here's the setup I did on my TJ.

Small single ARB compressor mounted below the master cylinder using the pressure switch and most of the harness that came with it. The switch is 90/120lb.

One gallon air tank mount to the fender after relocating the cruise control actuator to the grill brace. I used semi-truck air brake plumbing to hook it all up. The left side air coupler is on the tank:

I welded a bracket to the grill brace for the right side coupler. Yes, you do need to open the hood to access them, but I figured that would be fine for my usage. I have rubber plugs in the couplers when I'm not using them to keep dirt out:

I got lucky with the TJ that I had a blank switch spot and someone makes a labeled compressor switch:

I only have the one gallon tank for now, but there is room under the Jeep to easily mount a couple more gallons safely tucked up. We'll see if I need more tank capacity.

I believe Matt @fourtrail and Julius @Renegade ll run co2 tanks. I think Jpet had one at one point or another... anyway it's about 40/40/20 in my circles between OBA, C02 or scuba, and portable 12v compressor.

The system in my 3B is similar to this with the York compressor. I used a small aluminum oxygen tank for a reservoir. It is mounted in front and parallel to the rear axle under the bed.

The last iteration saw the installation of an "intercooler" between the pump outlet and the water/oil separator. That was the direct results of completely melting the guts out of the separator trying to blow out a clogged pipeline. I also use an unloader valve. I have quick couplers on both bumpers.

If someone needs the AMC factory V8 bracket for this, I have the one off a 401 I was previously using in my 3B. A couple years back when 3B iteration #5 was getting finished up, I fabricated a new bracket for the York to give me a little more space for my lower radiator hose.

I run a 20# CO2 tank same as what runs a good sized kegerator. They’re great that I can move it from vehicle to vehicle, don’t need to fuss with long hoses, I can fill tires super quick on the trail, I’ve ran air tools (briefly), and I go years between refills. There are the Powertank brand cylinders, but those are just fancy 20# cylinders with the regulator built in. I run a super short regulator with an air fitting on it.

I’ve never had an on board air system, but my CO2 tank has never let me down. I’d be hard pressed to give it up.
