Thanks Oldpappy, I was thinking counterclockwise but wasn't positive. I agree it wouldn't run at all, was really just trying to throw some different thoughts out since sometimes it's easy to focus too much on what it must be and miss things. Only runs on full choke and sooty plugs is a weird one. But I do agree it certainly sounds like a carb issue.

I can tell you how to make one run only on full choke and foul the plugs too :bananatool:

I've found Craigslist rebuilds usually vary in range; anywhere from a coat of spray paint over dirt to an engine that was rebuilt but not recently.

Reminds me of a F134 I bought for 200 bucks. Got it home and cycled it by hand, didn't feel right. I tore it down and turns out the guy's dad put all brand new parts but didn't have the correct size rings installed. Lucky he gave up and never tried to start it. I actually made out on that one.

It of course stands to reason that on running full choke only the plugs would be sooty, but why does it only run that way.

    "Most carb problems are electrical."

First of all, make sure everything is set to FSM tune-up specs. Are you sure the points are clean, set to correct gap, and timed properly? Bad points (and/or condensor) can create a poor running condition that mimics other problems.

QUOTE="Noah S, post: 1805252, member: 97061"]I popped the top off the carb the other day, and everything looked really clean. And the accelerator pump is working, trust me (I shot it in at myself testing it with the top off LOL). Would a missing check ball or weight mean that the accel pump would be INOP? The only thing I checked was for cleanliness and the float height, both seemed okay to me.[/QUOTE]

Are you saying that the check ball is missing?

Why does it only run that way? As suggested there is likely a vacuum leak. This would cause it to suck too much air and not enough fuel into the mix, the closed choke cuts way down on air intake causing it to suck too much fuel into the mix which is what fouls the plugs. With the choke open it isn't getting enough fuel in the mix to run.

Ok, back to square one. Silly question. Is the idle adjusted up enough?
What happens when you have your foot on the gas a little when you disengage the choke? Will it run? Smooth or rough? If rough, at what rpm is the lowest it will run before dying?

I've never had what you are describing happen so I can't relate to it. It sure seems like it would have to be a pretty substantial leak, probably hard to hear it sucking though.

Funny Howard, but might be something to confuse less experienced folks.

Here’s a video on what it sounds like when I fire it up. The starter has more hours than the motor at this point:rofl:

When you pushed the choke knob in it seemed like it sounded smoother but then quit?
Can you keep it running by quickly pulling the choke back out?

    Yes, this question.

If it will keep running, as you suggested in the original post, it suggests the vacuum leak or similar mixture issue.

If it dies regardless of choke, it might be more like fuel starvation, such as a low float level, low pump pressure, or obstructed fuel flow.
