Came Back From A Mechanical Inspection ....3 Items Failed.

getting my 63 CJ5 registered for the road. I just got it inspected as I need to pass a mechanical inspection before the registration office will plate it for road use.

    3 items failed.
    1) the vacuum operated drivers side wiper according to the inspection does not work properly.
    2) the front drivers side wheel bearing needs to be adjusted as it has a little bit of play in it.
    3) the Master Brake Cylinder is leaking and will need to rebuilt or find a new used one.

Item 2 is a no brainer I should be good to go with doing that myself.

Item 3 I am not sure what to do...the inspector basically said if you can get it back for re-inspection and it does not leak I will pass it. Not sure if there are any quick fixes or temp fixes that will stop the leak for a couple hours :)

Item #1 the wiper works in one direction with the vacuum line but stops when it gets to the left. I push in the activation lever and it cycles back to the right smoothly. So I can repeat this action and make it go back and forth by pulling and then pushing in and the pulling and then pushing in ( and so on) on the activation lever and it cycles well...almost manually operated. Is this the way it is suppose to work?

Any help with ideas or comments for item 2 and 3 would be much appreciated...

    thank you

The wiper it is not working right it should tick from left to right and back with each stroke. There is a sheetmetal cover with a rocker assembly inside and you likely have a broken spring inside. Don't open the casting yet. The gasket is hard to find and it seems to have vacuum in both directions.

Very common. IMHO, most likely it is dried up grease inside, etcetera. Possibly some WD40 or light oil injected into the air inlet would get it past the inspection.

My '56 has a hand-operated wiper on the passenger side. Wonder if they'd pass that?

The brake master... replace it. Not something to ignore.

No such thing as a good used master cylinder. You need to replace it with a new one, and bleed the brakes.

Agree with PeteL about trying some WD40 or other oil injected into the wiper inlet.

Master cylinder is very important and not that expensive.
I would replace it with a new one and bleed the brakes well for the sake of safety.
The brakes work on the M38A1's but were not that good new.
I know to leave plenty of room for stopping. I do keep them working and adjusted, but no freeway driving on the military Jeeps.
Planning on putting 11in brakes on the 64 CJ.
Never had the vacuum wipers working on my old Jeeps, but have heard that the lube can get them going. Worth a try.

Vacuum wipers will hesitate when stepping on the throttle too, I wonder if he referred to that?

Will try spraying WD40 inside the wiper motor through the air inlet. Hoping that I will get a back and forward motion at least once :)

Just order a new master cylinder off Amazon , free next day delivery for Prime members. Came to $94 cdn all in ($70 US). Very reasonable. Few comments from early CJ5 owners say it is a perfect fit. Hope so.

thanks all for the comments much appreciated.

I usually use an eye dropper full of brake fluid in them.

Brake fluid would not be too corrosive ?

Brake fluid is an excellent lubricant for rubber, such as is in wheel and master cylinders. It will strip paint, but it is not "corrosive".

Will try brake fluid in the wiper air inlet today and let you know the verdict…thx

No luck with the WD40 spray. It actually slowed down its wipe cycle.
Ordered an electric motor yesterday.I will install temporarily to pass the inspection and then replace the original vacuum motor back. I never drive her in the rain so not overly concerned. Wondering maybe if a light oil as suggested would work better? Will try an eye dropper of brake fluid when it is off and let it soak in.

Wheel bearing has been tightened up.

Brake Master cylinder has been resolved to pass the inspection. Have not replaced it yet with the new one.
When I slid the rubber boot off a pool of oil came out. Cleaned it all up and went for a drive braking hard and often. Checked to see if any signs of an oil leak while boot was still off None. So for now will pass the inspection and later this winter replace with the new MC

In getting my wagon wiper motor rebuilt by Flicken Wipers I asked about the CJ. He does not work on them (did not say why) but he did give me some advice. He said put the whole thing in the oven at a very low temp for 30 mins or so. He said that will melt the original grease which is what you are supposed to use. It’s special somehow. He said the tricks of brake fluid, transmission fluid, WD, etc. don’t really work to solve it. If the oven doesn’t solve it, then find another one or rebuild. Here is is eBay parts kit https://www.ebay.com/itm/404018627059#LISTING_FRAME_MODULE

Thanks for the info much appreciated I wonder what low heat temp I should set the oven on?

    Another quick question.
I am about to pull off the original wiper motor....how do I get the wiper arm off ? is it simply a push fit onto the motor spindle? use a pry bar gently to wiggle it off?

I'd go easy, there are rubber parts on the paddles inside.

I'ld say 165f or "warm" would do it.
Turn the heat off and put the part in the oven.

As I recall , there is basically a wire across the end that works like a spring locking mechanism. I just kept fiddling with it and eventually it popped off. Just be careful doing any prying for creating damage.

Check the vacuum line coming from the fuel pump first. They do dry rot and crack. Simple things first!!
