What is this spring around the TRE? Is this an old school set up....dont think I've seen this before. D25....Obviously the boot is missing as well. The drag link TRE does not have it....maybe because it was swapped to saggy box and it's had some work done on it.

I have seen some older tre's with this. they had a metal washer for a seal, the spring pushed down on the metal washer to hold it in place/tight against the ball socket.

That sounds like what this is.....kind of thinking this along with all the TREs gets replaced as good practice for cleaning up the outers...kingpin bearings etc

Anyone have a recommendation for TREs? Local FLAPs are pricey - are the standard online jeep suppliers selling omix junk on this, or is it something better. Looks like I can get Moog at summit...

Make sure I am doing this right.....with a 2hole knuckle on the passenger side, I need 2 LH thread TREs for the passenger side, and the 1 driver side TRE is RH thread, and the TRE at the saggy box pitman arm is also like the driver side with RH thread? So two of each basically.....

Yeah with a two hole knuckle it's two of each. Just make sure the existing driver knuckle fits in the pitman arm good. (Anything is possible)

Moog is probably still better than Omix, but don't expect the quality you used to. It's been owned by venture capital companies since 2017.

Your best bet for quality stuff is NOS Moog off ebay.

I've had excellent service from Moog TRE's. I would rate them at the top of the replacement parts and better than OEM. James you can get on their web site and double check to make sure you have 11/16-18 threads on all those.

For the 2 hole knuckle swap I just finished, I used 2ea of ES62L and ES140R. I got my TRE's from NAPA. Not enough time on them to know how they will wear.
If your making new Tie Rods, I have the LH and RH 11/16-18 taps.

So what's the deal with a non-removeable TRE? Looks like it was welded on the the drag link and It's about 30" to the other end which is threaded and has a sleeve that clamps it along with the opposite TRE (the one at the saggy box pitman arm.

A lot of "modern" stuff has "non removable" TRE's. Drag links and to a lesser degree, tie rods have only one removable end.

looks just like the drag link that fits an intermediate. the 74 had one and the 76 cj7 im running now has one. due to the different clocking of the box the 76 measures about 22 inches. the one on the 74 if i recall was longer I have no straight un cut one to measure.

I believe Scott @Buildflycrash has that type of drag link on his cj5. Gotta dig through his thread but I believe he mentioned length in his build or reverse ford thread.

The front D44 in Ethans willys came from an 80's Wagoneer, it had a drag link like this -
    20230808_190003.jpg

Come to think of it, my Commando is the same way...one ongoing end and one short end with an adjustment in between.

Thanks....As best I can tell, the steering column and box was from an AMC era FSJ, so that would kind of mesh with what you say - guessing the FSJ drag link was carried over to the Willys along with the box and the rest of it. I thought it was interesting the tie-rod was using the old school spring load dust shield (see first question in the thread) but the drag link was using the rubber boots style. So, I'll get a good measurement and see if I can find something from an FSJ that might match - or I can consider building a new drag link with two removeable TREs.
