Starting my rebuild of the Dana 18. Was getting ready to remove the output shaft bush but before doing so wanted to see how snug the new bushing would fit. New bushing slid right in, actually it's loose. My question is do these output shafts come with different inner bores or was this one likely bored out? Did Novak send the wrong bushing? Is the bore of the output shaft tapered?

The bore of the shaft is .78" and the outer diameter of the bushing is .75".
    Thanks!
    Pat

Should be a snug press fit of the bushing in that bore. I have a new OEM output shaft and will measure the bore.

The bore on the new shaft is 0.750". The 5 used rear output shafts on the bench all measure the same. 0.030" is a lot of wear where there shouldn't be ANY. I suspect an old bushing must have been seized to the front output at some point and wallowed that out. Those bushings usually do need reamed to fit the front output shaft pilot. I would find a replacement rear output shaft. The early Brown & Lipe shafts with the castle nut and cotter key are interchangeable and I prefer those over the later self locking nut versions. Peter Debella still has a supply of original NOS Willys Overland rear outputs. Whatever you do, do not buy an omix replacement. If you don't see the source for the parts, assume it is omix.

Thank you John, I really appreciate the info!
Found a new used shaft, should be here in a few days. If that one doesn't look good I'll reach out to Debella.
'Also thanks for the heads up about omix.

New used ebay shaft showed up. Not impressed won't slide into output companion flange without some pressing. Going to call Peter Debella in the morning.

    FYI,
I just rebuilt a big hole 1.25” D18 that I got free from our classifieds.
On the “ free” case, both yokes were, less than desirable.
I rehabbed the case with Novak’s rebuild kit with the intent of harvesting the yokes from my “in service” D18.

Both sets of yokes, meticulously cleaned inside and out, did not slide on their shaft easily. In fact, a bit of RTV got them further (I only sealed them when I installed for final) by hand.
It took a rubber mallet to get enough threads the use the nut to pull them in.

I can’t speak for Omix quality but in my limited experience, they shouldn’t slide home “easily”.
    Hope that helps.
