New Project: Starting With Identification Questions...

Hello to everyone!

I just picked up my first Jeep from a close family friend for 20 oz of silver. I know I got a huge head start with the deal I got and I want to do this Jeep right as its been in the family since new. I've searched and read just about anything I could regarding the specs but I am still having trouble figuring out the year and some of the engine specifics.

I was told it was probably a 1960 but that doesn't seem to mesh with what I am seeing online. Based on what I am seeing with the axels and transfer case I am leaning toward this being a later 60's model. Can anyone help provide direction? Once I have this nailed down I can order the appropriate FSM and get this restoration started.

Front Axle- Dana 27A
This is based on the tag still attached to it;

Rear Axle- Dana 44
This is also based on the tag still attached to it;

Transfer Case- Dana 18
Based on stamp reading C-18-15-10-2
It has the Warn Overdrive

Engine- Buick V6 but still unsure of specifics

Found numbers where it runs into the firewall;

Also has "360" printed a couple times.

Any help or additional places to look to pin the year/model/specifics is greatly appreciated!

Based on the fuel tank, grille, and windshield, I'm going to say it's either a late 69 or early 70.
Looks like a solid little CJ, and the v6, overdrive and 4.88 gears is an excellent drivetrain combo.

We can tell you year if you give us the serial number from the data plate, front frame rail, or even the title if you think it may be correct. That being said, parts on these old jeeps have usually been swapped over the years.

 

Unfortunately no data plate to provide additional information. California Highway Patrol installed a new plate so I could get it registered. As for the front frame rail, I haven't been able to find anything as the tub is still on.

 

Thanks for the encouragement and direction! I just want to get this nailed down with some certainty.

The OP's dash is a custom job.

 

1966-71 CJ5, v6, OD, 4.88's my favorite period for Jeeps. Nice rig. Good luck!

 

Its stamped into the top side of the frame rail in the engine compartment, passenger side, above rear hanger of front axle.

 

Nice clean looking Jeep. I would gladly double your money

 

I've looked up and down the rail and couldn't make out anything remotely close to a stamp. I tried hitting it with a wire brush too thinking it would have exposed something but I'm still over here right where I started. I'm starting to think that the anti rust treatment on the frame is making this task impossible.

 

I wouldn't get too hung up on "what year is my Jeep?"
You've got a nice CJ, just fix what's broke and drive it & enjoy it.

 

That is a great find! 4.88's & an overdrive is an excellent combo. Looks like '69 to early '70 to me too. Late 70 & 71 had rear fuel tank & side marker lights on the front fenders & drivers side rear quarter panel. Yours has electric wipers with the motor on the bottom. It also has the larger curved top glass windshield.

It used to have a single stick transfer case but now has been updated to a twin stick. This is a common conversion. The dash is not laid out as original, the speedometer is not from a CJ5. None of that matters. It looks like an excellent jeep.

Yep. And the 225/4.88/OD is indeed the best of the era. Works great on and off road.

 

I have a 1970 title model year built in 1969. If you have any questions or need pictures let me know. Also have the 4:88 rear and LSD V6.
