Heat Wrap Fenderwell Headers?

It’s hot out. My headers are hot. My feet are hot.
Would wrap help? Who’s done it? What do you think? Got any photos?

 

When i had fenderwell headers i heat wraped the with DEI heat wrap but i only did the parts of the header in the engine bay. I didnt want to rub the lower section on a rock a rip off the wrap. It helped a little but i dont have a themp gun so im not sure what the actual before and after temps were. I think there might be a pic or two in my build thread. I think the ceramic coating on my block huggers are more effective.

 

I don't run headers (anymore) Vividly remember those days of not being able to keep my feet on the floor. My pipes are wrapped from the flange to the muffler ( iron manifolds) with the cheap stuff. You can almost hold the pipe right below the flange with a bare hand.
To do headers properly you'll have to pull them.

 

Pulling them would only take a few minutes each. I do worry about scraping the stuff off when wheeling.

These Dauntless headers seem to fit well on my ‘80 231. Would Dauntless manifolds fit correctly on a 231? I couldn’t do that before CO it seems that would require a completely new exhaust system.

I did my Hookers in the 3B the same way. Keeps the heat out of the engine bay and off the spark plug wiring. I was more worried about just the debris off the front tires removing the wrap. I have aluminum heat shields between the tub and all the exhaust. Very effective.

 

Aluminum heat shields like duffer has would be a good way to go. Space them on standoffs with a 1/2" to 1" air gap to the floorboards.

 

My new exhaust runs above the crossmember, close to the master cylinder, trans, and floorboard. I wrapped it with this stuff I bought on Amazon.

Definitely reduces heat, time will tell how long it lasts.

 

Wrapping does void warranties because it holds so much heat in. I have a set of Hooker Super Comps that the tubes are delaminating from the heat. The other set I unwrapped before the damage set in. Those I had ceramic coated instead. If you decide to go that route silver offers better heat protection than black.

 

How thick of a piece would you think would work?

 

The shield can be really light weight. The aluminum I used under the tub, as Roy posted on 1/2" standoffs, is about 0.012". The free standing shields where the headers pass through the inner fenders are .090" as there needed to be some strength there and the shields under the toe boards are .063". The thickness is dependent on the strength you need. It functions primarily through reflection and creating that air space.
