I have a 1965 CJ-5 with an F134 engine. I am in the process of replacing the stock generator with a rebuilt one. When I mount the pulley with integral fan on the generator shaft, the back of the pulley/fan scrapes on the front of the generator housing. As you tighten the nut that holds the pulley on the shaft, there is nothing for the pulley to butt up against and it continues to slide on the shaft until it hits the housing. Is there supposed to be some sort of sleeve or spacer that slides over the generator shaft and butts up against the armature shaft?

The generator shaft is cylindrical and not tapered. It does have a keyway and a woodruff key to keep the pulley from spinning of the shaft, but the keyway does not prevent the pulley from sliding too far back on the shaft.

Thanks in advance for your help,
    Bob

Most generators I have worked with used a spacer to tighten against. Do you have the old gen?

Definitely has a spacer originally. If you have a starter/alternator repair shop in your area they should be able to set you up.

I turned the old generator in as a core. The auto parts store still had my core when I went back, but it did not have a spacer either.

Thanks C-dubb. I'll see if I can find a generator/alternator shop in my area.
