No one has brought up departure angle with a rear mounted spare. Dropping of a ledge may cause some interference. What would be a good
height from the bottom of the spare tire to the ground?

No nails on the fire trails, or on the two lane blacktop roads, or I am just lucky enough to miss them. I did blow a tire off the bead once at Deer camp, hit a patch of ice one a curve in the trail, spun out hit the berm and broke the bead loose. Started walking ran into one of the guys going to town, he took me back to camp, I got the air compressor, filled it up and filled the tire back up. No harm no fowl. Got lucky again.

The bottom of my 33" spare on the B is right at 30" off the ground. The shackles will be in the dirt before then at about a 57 degree departure angle.

One thing to remember. If you are fabricating a tile carrier like mine. The center piece which carries the rim/tire may be powder coated from the manufacturer, which mine was. This created problems welding to the tubing unril is sanded it off. Try to get one without powder coat.

It looks like the rim is centered on the back edge of the tub. That was about what I was thinking of doing. Yours looks adjustable. Where do I buy one
of these and does it come with a rear view camera? :D

Some very clever ideas and great fab skills on display in this thread. I'll likely shamelessly copy one of these for my CJ6. But let's remind ourselves that the OP is hoping to keep his Willys logo exposed.

Having your Willy exposed can lead to some serious trouble. :worry:

I preferred the side spare tire system, but it is good only with small tires, and it must be reinforced from inside body. The look is vintage Jeep, just need to take care coming into the garage. It keeps the possibility of using the tailgate easily.
For big tires or personal choice, it is easier with some money to fix something strong to carry a rear spare tire, the Jeep structure is strong enough!
