Spare Tire Ideas

I keep a jack, compressor and plugs in the tool box. Hope for the best.

 

Fact is, in over half a century, I've never used a jeep spare.

 

They don't have nails in your part of the world?

It's actually been quite a few years since I had a flat on the CJ, but my son seems to have an attraction to road debris...he's 19 and has already had to change a flat 4 or 5 times on the Wagoneer.

 

This is the only Jeep I ever built with a side mounted spare. Yes they do look way cool with skinny tires.
I actually put it to very good use one time.
I was out collecting firewood in an area with large dense trees. I had to do a lot of tight backing into the area weaving my way backward into the stand of trees. Was only cutting out the damaged timber.
One turn was so tight I had to ram my side mounted spare up against a tree and pivot the Jeep around that very tight turn. Left front tire was up against a big tree butt as the factory side mounted spare tire pushed hard into another big tree on my right. The spare actually functioned as pivot up against that tree.

That’s definitely a good bit of firewood. Did you hand split that?

Don’t want a log splitter.
I still split all my wood by hand.
I need the exercise.

Some of us don't have that pesky tailgate problem.


If one doesn't need tailgate access, you can come straight off the pintle hitch mount. I did run a post through the rear body panel to a cross bar between the frame mounted roll bar legs for this. Super solid.

I'm a bit surprised Ken didn't tweak his spare mount using it for a Jeep pivot. Not long after I purchased my 67 CJ 5 (new), I was driving past Bozeman's Barmuda Triangle one evening and some drunk opened his drivers door just as my spare tire was passing him. The edge of that door hit pretty much dead center in the tire tread and did indeed tweak both the mount and the tub support. The guy was pretty upset that his door didn't close anymore but declined my offer to call the cops for some reason.

 

I have never popped one on a trail but same can not be said on-road where I've had several flats and one major blow out (Cooper SST).

 

The quality of tires today is nothing like 50 years ago, as a kid running bald recaps, I had a lot of flats to deal with. I do not want to jink myself but I have 138K on my pickup and never had the spare out. My last Jeep 168K when I sold it, and never a flat. My new CJ project has a mounted spare in the back and it is a real pain in the ***. I think I am just going to run around the farm and into town basically the local area without a spare, maybe plugs and a little air compressor in my tool bag, and hope I have the mobile phone. I guess I still know how to walk and hitchhike . Last couple of weeks, I have been dinking around and building a new bumper and at this moment am working on a swing out for spare, jack, and extra fuel for running around the outback



My goal is building it to allow easy removal of the swingout for local driving and easy install when heading out exploring

 

Only change one due to a sidewall puncture from chasing cows in the rocks. Tires were some what dry rotted *** happens quickly
in this part of the country. Another was on the highway while in mid pass of a semi. Right front blew and was pulling me toward
the truck. Older BFG with good tread but suspect tread separation from heat and dry rot.

 

Prices are insane. Become friends with a metal shop. Had one owner tell me I could come and scrounge his cut-off pile
whenever I wanted. Scrap prices are a determining factor.

 

this was kind of the idea i was thinking of if i decided to go "in bed/back seat" idea... then i would add a single bucket seat next to it

 

I remember my dad's fleet side f-250 had a simple spare mount that looked a lot like a eye bolt on the bed rail and a wing nut through the lug nut hole.

Inside the bed is a huge loss of space.
Like others I've gone 15years with 8plys. I've had flats but still been able to limp into a repair station. That's why I can't provide pictures. I've just now gotten a spare wheel and i got to play musical tires.

My plans are very similar to the Renegade I but with a passenger offset tire like *most* m38a1 and a driverside Jerry can like *most* m38a1
But with a swing away function to easily install a large cooler or keg. I'm thinking 1.5"dia .120 wall tubing on brass bushings passenger side and spring loaded pin on the driver side.

 

My M38A1 had tire on passenger side of cowl, and jerry can also on passenger side, behind door opening.

 

i wish i could do only two seats but that would involve leaving out either my wife or son. so i need at least 3 seats, but i dont plan on doing any intense offroading that would involve multiday

 

Leaving this here and recommending leaving room for a buddy...

 

Mine is like Colojeepguy. works OK . I made a notch in the pivot so you can just lift the whole thing off.
