I went and bought another ECJ5. I’ll post my progress here. Not sure exactly what I want to do with it.

Advertised on FB marketplace for $3500. I got him down to $3300 and loaded on the trailer. Then he couldn’t find the title so it’s $3000. If he comes up with the title I’ll gladly pay him the $300 difference.

I mostly bought it for the recently rebuilt Dauntless engine. It does have good 33” Mickey Thompson mud tires. The floor pans and bed were replaced and look decent. New Mile Marker locking hubs. Starts hard but runs good. Carb rebuild and Pertronix should fix that.
One of many problems is it only has 3rd gear, he said he was drinking and tried doing a burnout in 4wd on pavement. Hopefully it’s just the shift forks.

A couple small boat anchors included.

What do y’all think about the only 3rd gear issue?

o_O that's some serious corrosion. If you put the tcase in neutral will it shift? Pull the shifter off otherwise and see if its toast.
    Cool

Or one of those old guy orthopedic transmissions. You don't have one of those yet.

Knocked the teeth off the main drive gear (input shaft) and or the front gear on the countershaft. :(

Yup. 3rd is straight through on the mainshaft. 1st, 2nd, and reverse require the countershaft which is driven by gears mentioned above.
I don't think you'll get any usable parts from that spare though.

It’s pretty far gone but what you see is mostly just dirt. It was laying in an ant bed.

lucky I have a spare T14 from my 4speed swap.

It’s bad but not as bad as it first looked.

I did some more poking around over the weekend. There is some good things about this CJ I don’t think the PO even knew about.

First, the hard starting issue was completely solved by pulling on the choke cable. I sprayed some PB in both cable ends and easily operated now.

Has swapped D30 disk front. Looks like mid 70s 6 bolt calipers.

Manual Saginaw steering looks to have been done well. Driver side engine mount modified nicely and a hefty brace on the gear box.

I think maybe he was telling the truth about that rebuild. This is super clean.

    Has a great fan shroud.

I’m not familiar with this brake setup . Looks like a small MC and a plastic remote.

    Is this original for a’69?

    Is it even a’69?

I would be curious to see what kind of brake MC it uses

If you want to try and save that transmission, try soaking it in a bucket of white vinegar.

Yeah, make sure the tie rod end goes into the hole closest to the knuckle if there are two holes. Your steering geometry is going to be off if it’s not.

    It’s a single hole.

I adjusted the timing and plugged this vacuum leak. It’s a T on the PCV valve. Immediately Ran better.
