    Hello all,

Its been a while, but going back to project. I sourced and added PS to my 198, which was no easy task finding the brackets, but it seems to work great....except...That when i turn to maximum left or right, the hose really tightens up like too much pressure or something and there is a fairly large sound. It goes away as soon as i turn away from maximum. Other than that it steers well, etc. Everything installed is brand new (hoses, fluid) or remanufactured from parts stores (gear and pump). thoughts?

Also, is a cooler required, needed, suggested, good idea, not worth it, etc?

Jeep is not for major off road or racing use, just put around mostly.

    Thanks all!

If it’s a squealing type noise most likely belt slipping or fluid flow control valve making noise. The hose tightens because pressure is building up as the systems tries to continue turning the steering but cannot. Forcing the steering to turn at the end of travel is hard on the pump, belt, and pressure hose, builds up heat in the system which breaks down the fluid. Not a recommended habit if you want your system to last.
Regarding a cooler, unnecessary on most applications. I won’t have one on my CJ-5 with 33” tires most likely. My CJ-6 with 37’s will have one but that also may get hydraulic assist in addition to power steering.

I dont think its a belt slipping as i am familiar to what that sounds like. So what is the solution if not the belt?

Quit forcing the steering against full travel. You hear the noise, back off. No different than any other vehicle.

not forcing, just when it gets to the end on a tight turn

Ayuh,.... So back off the turn a tiny bit,....

There's no "Fixin'" it, as that's the pump overloadin', against it's valving,....

As for a cooler,..... On my pickup, it's just a longer bit of the steel tubin' that hangs in front of the frame to catch abit of coolin' wind,.....
I wouldn't run without a cooler, as the heat will shorten the pump's life,....

What you're hearing is the pressure relief valve opening & turbulence of the fluid passing through it. As Nickmill stated the hose gets stiff because when the steering box assist piston can't move anymore the pressure in the system increases until the pump relief operates. Again per Nick no different than anything else with hydraulic power steering.

Thanks....As far as your cooler tubing, i was thinking of doing that as well on the low pressure side. In looking at adding PS to my 83 Toyota 4X4 (my 2nd vehicle ever in my life) i am also refurbishing, i noticed this same thing on diagrams for that. Since i do not have the parts for that do i just make it out of brake line material? Is it the same only bigger diameter? As i will look to do that for the jeep as well.

Ayuh,..... On the low pressure return, ya, 3/8" brake line oughta work just fine,....

Early Ford pickups used a solid loop cooler that mounted on the front crossmember. It was little more than an extended hardline.

Personally, unless you are constantly working the PS for hours or running a hydroboost system, I feel there is little need for an added cooler in the PS system.
