Anyone have a picture of the correct spark plug wire routing for the Dauntless? There are looms welded to the rocker covers, but the one on the right side doesn't seem right.

There were a few different routing ways, depending on the year. Same for the coil location.

Here's what I have. Do I have the valve covers on the wrong side? The baffle for the breather was on the forward left bank when I got this engine.
I see now, it looks like there is a wire loom attached to the valve cover that I don't have. Is there one on the other side too?

Yes, Ollie your valve covers are crossed up.
There are 3 ? different styles of cable holders for the Dauntless.
What year is your engine and where you plan to mount your coil ?

Thanks, I have no idea what year it is. I bought just the engine to swap into a Willys PU. I mounted the coil to the front face of the left head.

Also, does the baffle go under the PCV or the breather?

What number is the distributor ? That will among other things can give clues to its year.
    Baffle goes under the pcv.

For Ollie, I think your valve covers are on the correct sides for the application it came out of based on the welded on tabs for the engine wire loom on the right side cover. On my ‘69 cj5, the only difference I see is my oil fill cap is in the blanked off location at the front of your right hand cover.

No idea on the Dizzy. I bought it from a forum member. This engine is a mish mash of parts from different years and models. When I switched the valve covers, it put the wire looms at the back...the dizzy is on the front.

the valve covers are in the correct position for that early style . and the clips for the wire loom are correct. your just missing the plug wire holder on the right side that mounts under the valve cover screws .I think you have one on the left. they are specific and are marked left and right. The later covers with the oil fill on right front are little more user friendly, but either will work.

couple photos of a engine i sold recently. Missing the plug wire holders. I used 120degree spark plug boots that keep the wires close to engine. Coil will mount off of alternater bracket mounting bolt if you wish. tucked in out of the way. IMG_0561.JPG

My very early '67, built in Aug 1966, has the plug wire holders that bolt on with the valve covers as well as the welded loom clips. However, the loom on the passenger side is very near the center of the cover, which unfortunately means that a Dauntless sticker won't fit on the flat area. I suspect this may be the reason that clip was moved forward sometime later.

Wow, great information thanks to all. It clearly shows how lose everything was back in the day. I'll add one more possibility for the coil location. Left front head. I'm going to use a FI system so fuel pump clearance won't be a problem.

Where can I buy the looms that attach to the cover bolts?

Does your Jeep have a fuel return line from the filter?

Yes, you can see it in the last picture in my post above. From the top of the fuel filter, it makes a 180 degree turn straight down, and then turns horizontally and runs next to the edge of the oil pan below the drivers side exhaust manifold towards the firewall.

I bought some of the external items I needed for my engine from Dave Malke, who specializes in used Dauntless parts. You might send him a text at (920) 213-1681 and ask if he has any plug wire holders available.

You might also try placing a WTB ad in the EarlyCJ5 Classifieds and see if any of the members here happen to have an extra pair they'd be willing to sell you.

Mike, where did you get the short stub exhaust pipes? I will need those to start an exhaust system of some sort.

local muffler shop did those. I put them on in case i wanted to test run. Or as you said would be a good start for exhaust pipe
