Replacement Seats.

I am looking to get two front seats from the junk yard for my 62 CJ5. I need suggestions...

 

I have been searching the salvage yards also. I have not found any that what I consider a perfict fit. It seems almost all car and truck seats are too long to fit between the rear fender well and the steering wheel, not enough room to get your feet in front of them. Too close to the brake and clutch. Also the seat backs are too thick, puts you too close to the steering wheel. Let us know what you find.
Someone here got seats from a VW Passant. That is my target vehicle on my next visit to the salvage yard. will measure and see if they will work on my intermediate. I had rather not do the fender well mod if I can avoid it.

 

I’ve found the most critical measurement is from where your calves rest (front of the seat) to the lumbar area. Many of today’s cars, you sit low with your legs nearly straight, and the seat section is really long. If you put that in a jeep, your calves will hit the seat when trying to use the pedals.

Mine are Hyundai Accent, and I love them. Made in Australia.

The '92 Chevy S10 seats that were in my '71 when I got it are pretty comfortable and have thin back. I liked them enough to replace the cloth upholstery with black vinyl just last week:

These seats look pretty natural in a Jeep.

Sure can. I'm on the road today but can post some pictures later tonight. Both seats use the stock frames with small mods or adapters.

Since most likely my son (6 something) and myself (5.6 on a good day) will be both drive it, I want to have the tracks to be able to slide adjust the seats.

 

Since you don't have the factory brackets, my pictures probably aren't super useful.

The factory brackets look like this (with the hinging part of the passenger bracket removed:


Here's the bottom of the Driver's bracket. You can bolt sliders on the flat portions under the seat:


Here's the bottom side of the passenger seat with some large plates to adapt the S10 to the Jeep hinging frame:


The passenger side has no provisions for sliders from the factory.

I can get better pictures of things when I'm back home on Tuesday.

Since your son is so tall and the body is still on process, you may want to consider notching the fenderwells for more clearance. There are lots of threads about this. Here are a couple:

Thanks, Fireball! I am trying to avoid more tub fabrication since I am almost ready to paint but if there is a time to do it is now, when all is still off the tub. I will consider it.

 

For a 6footer, the Wheelhouse Notch is definitely worth taking the time to do.

 

I moved the tank to the rear, and gabbed wheelhouse notches, and was able to use seats from a 2001 Subaru, Forester I think. They are really comfortable and I 6’-5” and finally have plenty of room!

 

Looks like a good setup you have. Could you post how much you notched the wheel house? also could you post a photo of the underside of your wheel well? thanks

 

Sorry about the delay, I am not near the Jeep. I did find some pictures from the process, though. As I recall, I cut back 5” from the front of the wheelhouse, and I kept the factory angle on the upright part. I am running 33x12.5x15 on factory narrow track/offset Dana 44 with no wheel spacers with 2.5 and 2.5” lift springs so my upward wheel travel was already limited by the tires hitting the inner fender. That being said I flexed it every which way I thought I could and the tires did not hit the notch, then I put some camping gear in the back and did find an angle where the tires do hit the notch slightly. I am thinking 4” of notch may have been better.

 

Thanks for all the photos and detailed measurements. Your set up and mine are the same, only my tires are a little smaller (31x10.50x15) with my 2.5 lift I am thinking I should be fine with a 5 inch notch. Thanks again Jim.
