I'm replacing the tubular crossmember on my '47 CJ-2A. Planning on replacing it with either a piece of 2"x3" OR 3"x3" piece of metal.
Question, would it be best to use 3/16" gauge or 1/8" gauge for the crossmember. The 2A frame is basically 1/8" gauge metal where as the 3A is near 3/16" Which gauge would be best? The frame will also be boxed in from the front shock mounts all the way to the end of the frame. Similar to the M38. Boxing in the frame will hopefully strengthen the frame up for a Saginaw steering system.

Personally, I’d just stick with 1/8”. If welding a heavier steel to a lighter steel, the heavier steel won’t flex as much (especially tubing, as opposed to channel), and it will transfer all its stresses to where it connects to the lighter steel, and cracks will develop through/around the connecting welds.

I have a new repro one I bought from Kaiser Willy's that I was going to run before I found chrome bumpers for my Tux. Not planning on using it and I'm not that far from you.....DM me if you're interested I'm sure we can work something out. I painted it with POR15 gloss black and had it installed but it hasn't ever left my garage...

The crossmember needs to twist when the frame does. If it's too stiff there'll be greater stress where it meets the frame rails and more likely to crack. I'd go with the 1/8" wall tubing. Just my opinion, though.

I have used more 1/8 than 3/16 there, and I always replace it for my saginaw swaps. I've not had any issues with either size tube. I also fit the box sections inside the frame rails and weld to the edge.

You can see the same process in my '63 build. I split the cross member there as I've already got boxing in the way or I would have made it solid across.

Really appreciate all the great responses! It seems most of ya prefer using 1/8" tubing. Now which size would you think is best, 2"x3" OR 3" x 3". I am moving the NEW crossmember right under the grille mount thus opening possible future motor options.
