I finally was able to get the Jeep in someone else’s hands that know what they are doing.

He came to the conclusion that the rebuilt carb I purchased was trash and shouldn’t of passed QC. Large vacuum leak on the choke side. Also since it had to be adjusted when I first put it on something wasn’t right. I am waiting on a replacement carb and unfortunately won’t be in until April.

The transmission now has issue shifting unless the motor is off. It will find reverse, but grinds. My mechanic seems to think the clutch needs to be replaced. I have to push the clutch petal all the way to the floor. He said he tried to adjust it but couldn’t get much out of it. Before I spend the money on him pulling the tranny, Can y’all confirm his thoughts?

Doubtful the clutch is bad, just out of adjustment.

Clutch adjustment is easy; you could try changing it yourself. Discussed in way more detail than we can cover here in the TSM. The '77 TSM is free to read and download here - Jeep® Parts Manuals online

the tranny is out of a 80’s model Jeep, it’s the T176 with the Dana 300.

There is an '82 manual there too. You'll have to figure out what's original and what has been transplanted.

If it's an actual exhaust backfire (which sounds like a .30-30 blast) it will be either something electrical or valve related. If it is popping or sort of misfiring it could be many different things but likely tuning and timing. I would start with a compression test, that will give you an indication of the condition of the motor and find bad valves, lifters, etc. If every cylinder is within about 15% of each other, the motor is probably fine and just needs a tune up. You can rent a compression tester from your FLAPS or buy one for about $30.
