Exhaust For Gm Small Block Conversion

I'm going to be fabbing up a new exhaust for dads 69CJ5. The jeep has a GM small block in it with SM420 trans, saginaw ps conversion. I'm curious about either having the exhaust tips right in front of the rear tires or routing it to behind the rear tire. If anyone has any pictures of how there exhaust is routed with a v8 conversion I would love to see it. All advice appreciated. Thanks

What exhaust manifolds or headers were used for the conversion? With fenderwell headers your kind of stuck with a short and loud system exiting in front of the rear tire. That’s what mine has. If shorty headers or cast iron manifolds were used then the exhaust can be routed inside the frame and out the back for a quieter system. Finding a suitable path inside the frame can be challenging.

If I ever replace my exhaust I’m going with manifolds and pipes all the way to the back.

 

My '71 has a Buick V8 with stock manifolds that exit inside the frame but they ran the pipes to the outside. The mufflers are outside the frame under the seats and the pipes travel outside the frame past the tires and exit out the back. This setup would work well with fenderwell headers. For noise and fumes, it's better to exit out the back and angled to the sides.

I can take more detailed pictures tonight if I remember.

Some day in the future, I'd like to the move pipes/mufflers inboard where they are better protected for off-roading.

 

Just don't end the pipes below the doors or tailgate. Those spots let the exhaust draft In while you drive and idle. The rear corner is best and in front of the tire is ok and better with a rearward angle.

 

I initially ran duals straight out the back. It sucked the exhaust back terribly. They are turned 90° behind the rear tires now and I rarely get a whiff

The first picture I posted is after I took entire system off the have the wrap around pipes ceramic coated. I should have built it with stainless or aluminized exhaust pipe to begin with, the mild steel pipe rusted pretty quickly.

Thanks for the pics guys. Thats pretty much what I hand in mind for possibilities. I ordered a piping kit now I need to decide what mufflers I want to run. I woulndt mind running a delta series flowmaster but I dont want to pay 120 each for mufflers. So I'll probably run a turbo thrush or something. I would prefer for it not to resonate so bad it drives me insane.

 

Those are Flowmasters on mine and I hate them because they are way too loud. I've got a set of Thrush Turbos on the bench waiting for me to find some time to install them.
