Windshield Frame

I have also been looking at frames. I see some saying you can put a 76 and up windshield frame on a 74 but not exactly sure what the differences are and what i would need to swap. does it allow you to put on newer top and doors?

 

Starting in 76 AMC modernized the styling of the CJ5, part of which was increasing the angle of the windshield. If you put one on an intermediate it will look weird.

It'll look different. It slants back more and the uprights tilt toward the center. It's been done several times, I gather. Won't be an exact fit - you'll have to modify the mounting holes and some other stuff. And you'll need to use a top for a '76 and newer - the right top for an intermediate won't fit with that windshield. It requires that you use the newer style top and doors.

If you are thinking about going this route and buying the frame, I'd suggest you buy a whole used windshield complete; wipers, glass, dash pad, latches, everything. Get the body side of the hinges with the new windshield too. You will need to modify the dash so the latches work.

The '76-up frame is the same width as earlier frames where it meets the cowl, and is several inches narrower at the top of the frame. It also "lays/angles back" a couple inches more than an intermediate frame.
I've used the later frame on a '72 I had years ago, but I hated it. It just didn't look right, but I did get an inspection sticker that I needed by having it on my Jeep. They can be made to fit, but I recommend finding an intermediate frame.

are yj frames the same as late cj?

 

Here is my 1973 cut with a 76 + windshield and 76+ cj5 top. Swapped it out in a few hours the first time . You'll have to put 76+ door hinges on it like the above stated and of course what ever windshield doo dads the newer style hase... Ran it like this through the summer and then swapped back to the pre 76 windshield frame and put my hardtop back on for winter. I've since cut the frame in two and stretched it to fit a cj6 body. I'll solely be using my pre 76 windshield frame from here on out.

Late cj and yj frames are close different wiper blades and a few extra bolt holes. Also yj has some body lines on the bottom panel between the wipers.

 

ok I have a friend with a couple yj sitting out in the yard. They are more readily available for me, I have no top or doors for it anyway

 

It will require some work in the lower hinge department as the holes are different. The wiperers May need some wiring love as well.
