No More Wobbly Pedals! NOW WITH PICS!

This may be old news to some, but I think I just found a solution to the "Wobbly Willys Pedal Syndrome" that plagues almost every old Willys I've ever seen.

The problem seems to be that the cross-shaft that the brake and clutch pedals ride on goes through a steel bracket that is either bolted or welded to the underside of the frame. That shaft wears unevenly from normal use, as does the bracket. There is no bearing or bushing to replace. You can get a replacement shaft, but you're still stuck with the worn bracket mount.

Well boys and girls, the big brown goodie-truck just delivered an NOS pedal mount from an M38A1 that has replaceable bronze bushings in it, as well as a zerk fitting to keep it greased. My new Omix-Ada pdeal shaft actually had to be sanded down a bit to get it into the bushings, but now it is silky-smooth and has nary a trace of slop. I can't wait to get it mounted up and try it out! 8)

Oh, it ran $55 from Surplus City. www.surplusjeep.com

Don't bother looking for it on the web site, it isn't there. Just give them a call and they'll know just what you are looking for!

Sounds like a great fix. Now - do I spend another $50 while the Jeep is in pieces....

    Thanks for sharing.

I can't tell by the picture if there's a bracket of some sort welded onto the cross shaft carrier. Is this the same carrier that's used on a '70 CJ5?

I called Surplus City and they confirmed that there is a bracket perpendicular to the shaft that is designed to fit flush against the frame rail. Seems like a good idea and may prevent the assembly from moving out of alignment.

A bracket like that that fits flush against the frame rail sound like it would be pretty redundant to me. The stock M-38A1 did have a flat bracket similar to the '2A that bolted onto the inboard side of the MC and it is held on with the same bolts. This bracket stabilized the end of the shaft. Is that what you mean Beeser?

Yes, I suppose the added bracket would be redundant if the other mounting holes didn't have much slop in them. I'm confused now though. The guy at the surplus store told me the extra bracket bolted to the frame rail. He never mentioned anything about it bolting to the MC. Is it possible to get a clearer picture of the part? I'd like to make sure it would fit my needs before ordering one.

Never mind about the other pic. I took a look at the original one and it's clear enough. The extra bracket that I was referring to is the triangular shaped one. Does this bolt to the MC or frame rail?

I think this is the bracket of which you speak. found it on a 71 in a junk yard, mounts to the MC bracket and stabilizes the end of the clutch/brake rod. hole in the bracket is bigger than the shaft though. I'm planning to make an adjustable fitting to attach and hold everything in line. sorry about the angle of the picture, had to lay under the jeep to get it upsiddown. :coffee:

Actually, no. The bracket that I was referring to is cast into or welded onto the part that bolts to the frame lip (2 places). The bracket is triangular in shape and has one bolt hole that I believe goes to the vertical section of the frame rail.
