Update on our Father/Son Jeep CJ-5. We successfully installed a Motorcraft 2100 onto the inline 258.... she ran like crap at first.. but then Daddy figured out that the vacum line was in the wrong place.... GRIN.....Hey, I finally read the instructions --- OKAY....

Got all the gaskets changed and the oil sender, but still she is leaking on the passenger side. My son seems to think it is coming out of the dip-stick tube. He probably is correct. Because I can see no other place for the oil to be on that side. The oil is on the back passenger side of the engine. The oil does not go past the distriubtor.

Any suggestions on what to do or how to fix this most annoying leak would be appreciated.

If it's the dipstick tube, they're just pressed in. You can pull it straight out, then clean the place it seals and glue it in with some silicone.

More likely it's the valve cover. 258 valve covers are notoriously leaky.

I've seen a CJ-5 w/ a 258 spray the entire underside of the hood with oil out the dipstick tube.

RTV around the little "cap" where the stick went through it fixed that.

Brand New PCV and other stuff

Brand new PCV and hose. With clamps. New Valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, and other hoses.

I don't know how to tell where it is coming from. I have washed the engine. Dried it, then drove it and it (oil) is just there.

Thanks again for all the ideas,

The valve covers will distort around the bolt holes if overtightened. Even with a new gasket, if the cover is bent, they'll leak.

Bent covers can be fixed by hammering them flat around the bolt holes with a drift on a piece of steel.

Oil could come out of the top of the dipstick tube if the crankcase were pressurized; hence the suggestion of the PCV valve.

<deit> What else is in that area ... oil pressure sending unit? I'll go and take a look when it's light.

There is another spot for oil leaks. Its not real likely, but it can happen. The oil drain back passages in the block are all on the pass side. When I assembled my 4.0 I noticed the block where the head mates in the this area is fairly narrow. After assembling the engine I happened to read somewhere that it is suggested to use a little sealer on the head gasket on that side to help prevent an oil leak. Hopefully mine won't leak. I think chrysler factory gaskets have been updated for this issue. I can only believe that 258 could have similar issues since they are so closely related. Its probably not your issue, but it is one more possibility. I would exhaust any other possibility first before pursuing this.

A buddy of mine had the same problem. Oil blowing out the dipstick tube. It only happened at 3K rpms or above. He installed the later dipstick with cap, didn't help. Tried to clamp it, silicone it, no good.
Problem was too much crankcase pressure. Be sure that your PCV and related hoses are routed correctly, and the breather is in the right place. He had taken his apart, then put it together later... but not the same way...
He got his resolved, I'm sure you can too. Look for diagrams of the stock emissions equipment and hose routings/connections.
