This is kind of an update and a question. I am about half way done my t18 rebuild. I have the case all purdy and clean and now I want to paint it before I put the guts in. I went to my local autoparts place and the best they had was tremclad. Would it be good for a tranny? What have you guys used?

Don't know tremclad. I used plain ol' spray bomb on mine. Of course, this was in a dry climate, so you may need something better.

I would think Rustoleum would be ok, although it's fairly soft even after long drying. There are several brands of moisture-cured urethane paints, which should be considerably harder. I believe that POR-15, Eastwood Rust Encapsulator, Rust Bullet, and many others are varieties of this formula, but they aren't saying.

<edit> Rust Bullet does confirm that it's a MCU on its web site. It contains aluminum pigment, which putatively locks together to give moisture resistance. There are some "after" pictures as I recall that look pretty cool. Some of the zinc-filled paints like ZeroRust come in a variety of colors. I've always painted transmissions black, but a lighter color will be easier to see ... esp. leaks and such.

I've used tremclad before on Tonka, it does seem to hold up well but if you're into colours other than black I really can't recommend it, it tends to get dirty & won't clean up. I think engine enamel would be a good way to go, although I'm thinking of using silver POR15 on Tonk when the time comes. I've also seen photos of one where the guy used gray hammertone paint- looked real Purrrr-Teeee :).

I used POR15. That way it matches the frame and transfer case.

I recently bought a gallon of this. Would you recommend adding a "hardener" in the can so it isn't so soft?

I've seen small cans of enamel hardener (I think that's what it is) that's supposed to go in a gallon of topcoat.
