I just routed my exhaust from the back to the behind the rear drivers side wheel and it sticks out about 1.5 inches, but i am still getting fumes. what have you guys done about this and how is your exhaust routed?

Edit: Just thought that i should add that this happens with my full top with doors removed, sides and back rolled up. thanks.

On my '68 I have headers and duals, but I don't exit out to the side. Mine are turned in towards the center--quieter and no fumes.

I have outside-frame headers and some cherry bombs that exit before the rear wheels. I had to turn the tips towards the center and it made a huge difference - now I only smell like gas a little bit after I drive it ;)

    :? :? :? :?

Really? This is one of those things I know I shouldn't worry about until it happens but I do think about it occasionally. I want to run a single exhaust... do you know the best way to set it up so I don't choke on fumes? I come home smelling like "shop" every day. I'd love to be able to get out of my Jeep without smelling like anything other than myself.

Mine are just turned in about a 45* angle. No interior fumes and quiet.

I had the same problem when I exited mine to the sides. I bought in-frame headers and had the exhaust routed to the rear corners. It was a great investment and I don't get fumes anymore. I'm sure you could do this with the 258. I've got the 304.

    Good luck...Casey

Mine are routed to the side and exit before the rear tires. You can smell 'em when you're not moving, but they point straight out. I hadn't thought about turning them in...

Is pointing the pipe towards the ground the answer to not smelling fumes?

    weedy-

I can tell you from my experiences only. When routed out the rear, you'll get fumes while driving. When routed out the side, you'll get 'em while sitting still. I'm not sure that you can completely get rid of it. If they're telling you to turn the tips in, I'd try it. Just let us know if it works out for you ;)

careful with pointing them in, in VA you will not pass inspection if they exit anywhere but outside of the body....

I bought a "parts" jeep that was a '74 with the 258. PO had run the pipe straight out behind the driver's front tire and run it up the side of the windshield frame, trucker style.Even had the rain cap on the top. Sounded like an old farm tractor.

I have duel exhaust on my 75 that exit just behind the rear tires. Slanted slightly up and slightly back. I have not been able to smell any exhaust fumes with or w/o soft top on.

That is what i ended up doing. I figured out the key is to get the exhaust in to the Airstream beside the jeep.
