Diagnosing Oil Leak Into Exhaust

It's been a long time since I've posted! I've since moved cross country and dragged the CJ with me. It's been sitting for years because life got in the way but now I'm trying to get it back on the road.

The issue is oil in the exhaust. LOTS of oil, the V6 took multiple quarts to drive ~60 miles. On it's last run it started dripping liquid oil out just the passenger side exhaust (have side pipes so each side is separate). The bottom of just that pipe is coated with something that is black and tar-like.

I've pulled the plugs on both sides, no signs of oil in the cylinders. I'm suspecting that it's coming in through the head, likely from dead exhaust valve guides. That leads me to a few questions:

    1. Are there any other possible causes?

    2. Are there any checks I should do with the head on the vehicle?

    3. I've never removed a head before, are there any tricks I should be aware of or decent tutorials on how I should remove it? The last thing I want to do is break a head bolt in the block.

    4. Once I get the head off how do I confirm that the guides are the problem?

    5. How would I repair it? I do have another set of heads but they are from an engine that I never saw run. If the repair isn't crazy I'd prefer to do that.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Sounds like a scenario of drain holes in the head plugged up so oil not draining back, valve seals bad and oil leaking out into the exhaust?

Can you check that by pulling the valve cover?

If it is slow draining then loosening the valve cover should allow oil to leak out if it hasn't sat too long, i.e. engine still warm maybe?

Have you checked your oil level over a period of time to see if it slowly returns at all?

Are you saying that the plugs are not showing oil fowled? Bad valve guides dumping that much oil should show on the plugs. How much blow-by do you see if you remove the oil filler cap while running?

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

Not only that you'd be driving a smudge pot.

It's been sitting for a while since it did this (multiple years). It'll need some odds and ends before it will start up again (battery is toast, may need to deal with bad gas, etc). If I remove the cover is there anything I could look for to check for blockage?

I didn't see any come back. It was only driven about 60 miles since it started doing this and there is a pretty thick coating of black oil goo in the tail pipe.

If it was an exhaust guide wouldn't that allow the oil to go directly into the exhaust without going through the cylinder? I can start doing the odds and ends to get it turning over again.

That is what I'm thinking would happen, that the compression and ignition would blow it out the exhaust. Maybe not bad guides just the seals, there again this is just theory on my part....never had the scenario you describe happen. Only thing you can look for is drain holes in the head not plugged up, I have no idea what else could be happening.
