I recently purchased a 68 cj5. I am putting in a 350 and would like to improve the jeeps stopping ability. I am trying to research the most cost effective way of converting the front to disk brakes. The jeep will not be used as a off road vehicle unless it is necessary to get to a mountain bike trail. So I stock would be fine.

    I'm building a 48 Willys, and drive a 77 CJ-5, I'm converting both over to disc brakes.
In google, type in disc brakes. This should give you some good site.
There is good information in past articales here also, I got a lot of good information in these archives.
    Good luck.
If your still looking let me know. I have some pages in my favorites.

If you must have disks, you have two choices: either convert your existing front axle (Dana model 27) to disk brakes, or swap in an axle that already has disk brakes (usually a Dana model 30). The D27 conversion is on this site: http://www.earlycj5.com/tech/brakes/diskSwap/disc_conversion.shtml ... The Dana 30 pretty much involves finding a later model Jeep and bolting in the new axle. You may have to adjust the caster angle with a D30 in an early CJ - check the archives.

The easiest (and generally cheapest) route is to go to 11" drum brakes. You should already have a dual master cylinder in a '68, so all you need to do is swap the complete backing plates and drums. 11" drums, especially if they are drilled (search archive), work very well. http://www.earlycj5.com/tech/brakes/11InchSwap/11_swap.shtml

Call me dense but is the disc conversion the same for the Dana 25 as the dana 27? The link above was for the dana 25.

    thanks

I went from original brakes to 11" drums to Chevy half ton discs on the front of my Jeep. In my neck of the woods, it's probably cheaper to do the disc brake swap. The procedure is nearly identical for Dana 25/27 and 30 axles. You can get all the information you need @ www.oldjeep.com

    Hope this helps!
