Assembling A New Carrier For A Dana 30 Swap - Need A Little Help

I am swapping a disc brake wide track Dana 30 out of a 79 CJ into my 67 CJ. The Dana 30 has 3:55 gears and I'm changing it to 3:73 to match my rear. I bought a new carrier since the old one won't fit 3:73. I bought a Dana 30 rebuild kit and a lock-right locker. I have the lock-right already inside the carrier in the pic but the center pin is just pushed in hand tight. There is a lot of play between the spider gears and the carrier which made me realize I must need thrust washers. Here are all the parts I have to assemble my new carrier.

Anybody know if any of those washers in the pic are thrust washers that go behind the carrier gears? I don't think they are since none of them fit very well behind the carrier gears. When I pull the carrier with 3:55 out of the Dana 30 can I use those thrust washers in this carrier or should I get new ones? Or I could pull the carrier out of my Dana 27 if those thrust washers would work.

Thanks in advance for any insight you might have.

Thrust washers are not included with the LockRight or with the rebuild kit. You will need to pirate them from the 3.54 and down carrier that came with the wide track axle.

Awesome, thanks for the info. I wasn't sure they would fit the same. Do I need to keep track of which one came from which side and so on?

Some people call it a case others a carrier or ring gear carrier. The bearing that go on the end of it are called carrier bearings.

if you look here on page 6 Dana calls it a case
    http://www2.dana.com/pdf/AXIP-0076.PDF

if you look here Summit calls it a carrier
    https://www.summitracing.com/search...Ascending&tw=carrier&sw=Differential Carriers

if you got here 4 wheel part has a defination for carrier but not case
Drivetrain & Differential Glossary of Terms – Axles, Pinion Gear, Limited Slip, Locker, Locking Hub and other Drivetrain & Differential terms

I looked at some ford shop manuals they called it case.

So it seems the oem are calling it case and the aftermarket is calling it carrier. I don't really think it matters, but I think most hobbyist will know what a carrier is but may not now what a case is.

I think you'll find that if you call anybody but Dana in the aftermarket and start talking about your case, you'll have someone confused and questioning what you're referring to, or at the very least thinking you're talking about a Front IFS assy or 3rd member like a 9".

    Next question- What's an LJ?

Ask someone for a BandAid and you'll get one. Ask someone for an pressure sensitive adhesive bandage and they'll look at you funny.

New Dana 30 washers aren't in the pic. You can re-use the old ones if they haven't flattened out or appear severely worn.
The Dana 27 washers won't work and are different size if I recall.

LJ is a 04-06 TJ Wrangler Unlimited

This arguement is lame. I call them carriers, but call them whatever gets the point across.

Yes take the washers off your D30, but clean them VERY well, and keep track of which side they were on. Might not matter but doesnt hurt to be safe.

    nickmil In mothballs.

Look in any automotive text book and the part the ring gear bolts to is the case. There are two styles of carrier. Integral and non-integral. A carrier is also commonly referred to as a "pumpkin" or other such esoteric names. An integral carrier is the style that is non removable and has the axle tubes pressed directly pressed into it and welded in place. A Dana 44 or AMC 20 is an example of this. A removable carrier is as its name implies removable. An example of this is the Ford 9" or a Toyota 8". The carrier is removable from the housing and the internal parts can be serviced on a work bench without removing the housing from the vehicle.

Just because people call things by the incorrect name and don't care doesn't make it right. And since when is correct terminology lame? All incorrect terminology does is increase the confusion and communication issues like the ones in this thread.

    Best quote of this thread:

"Ask someone for a BandAid and you'll get one. Ask someone for an pressure sensitive adhesive bandage and they'll look at you funny."

That is why it's lame. It serves no purpose in this thread other than to pat one's self on the back. If you call it a carrier everyone will know exactly what you're after. If you call it a case, they may not. In my world the correct terminology is the one that works more often.

Others in the thread helped the OP. "Correcting" his terminology helps nothing and does not solve his issue.

It's called a front axle differential case in the Jeep world...PERIOD.
The bearings for the above are called front differential side bearings in the Jeep world...PERIOD.

    That is all.

    In the internet underworld........whatever.

Can I get a facial tissue?

And an LJ doesn't actually exist... it's what the internet calls the 04-06 Jeep Wrangler Unltd.... But if you talk to an actual Jeep engineer, that's not it's designation, never was. It's a Wrangler unlimited, or TJ-D... D for derivative. More useless drivel...And i'll go pat myself on the back now. The point being, that if I call it a TJ-D... you guys are gonna look at me funny... if I call it an LJ (who knows who coined it) you know what I'm talking about. Case vs carrier = about the same thing....

"Carry" on now that we all know what we're talking about. ;)
