I had the rear exhaust manifold stud broken off in the block so I had to remove the engine to drill it out. I have the engine on a stand....here's my question. The rear main seal has been leaking some; about a quarter size spot a week, so I'm considering replacing it. I understand it's a rope type seal. I do not want to have to pull the crankshaft for obvious reasons. Is it ya'lls experience that the rope seal will come out easily? Open to any advice you may have.
    Thanks in advance.

    Might work.
Do you guys go back with rope or neoprene seals if you can actually get the old one out?

I've done a few on my back with the engine in with similar tool. Engine on the stand totally go for it. Rope has always served me fine.

I just had that done at a local shop that's been in business since the 40's. The current owner has been there since 1977. He swears by the good quality rope seal. I see him tomorrow and try to get some additional info.

Thanks Mr Plow.....I'd really appreciate the info! I did order the removal tools mentioned above.
Is Kaiser Jeep a good place to get parts? Their clutch parts kit looks like what I need for clutch parts.

well, had the main seal replaced and there is still a leak! Sorry to report. It is smaller and by all accounts its oil not trany fluid. I know these jeeps mark there territory but I am on a quest to see if stopping this leak fully is a fools errand. I do know they went through the oil pan to do the work. It may very well be a case of dropping the transfer case and going through the problem that rout. Will try to keep anyone interested updated on 'my journey'... Just found this chat on the cj3 site. You, sir, have a Jeep that thinks it is a Harley.

There is a reason that there is now a rubber seal to replace the 1920s technology of a piece of rope. They simply work better for longer.
