I have a cj5 that originally had a 225 v6 in it and dana 18 single shift t-case. It is titled as 1971. It was manufactured in September of 1970. The rear axle is the 2 piece D44 with 3.73 gears, not the flanged axle. Is this a 19 spline axle? Is this not the original axle or is my jeep not a 71. I thought all the 71's had the 30 spline flanged axle. Please help.

You are right, a build date of Sept 1970 is a '71 model year and should have the 30 spline, flanged one-piece axles.
The Two-piece rear was discontinued about mid-year of the 1970 model year.

So either your build date is wrong (check it with the VIN) or someone swapped an older axle into this '71.

    :(

or is it possible that the manufacturer was still using up old in stock parts? iirc, both kaiser and amc did that for a while so there are some odd mixtures around.

While this is true, I doubt it in this case as his manufacture date is at least a month or more into the 1971 model year. More than likely the axle was swapped into this jeep due to costs of fixing a busted axle. A mid year change for the 70 model year changeover to 1 piece axles would have occurred in january or febuary of 1970, no where near the month of september, so the old parts would have been used up months before his Jeep was produced.

And just so people know, car companies today are "just in time" meaning they never carry more than 7-10 days worth of production stock. This is normal and has been going on now for about 20 years.

Mcruff is rite about just in time, i drive over the road and del to Chrysler and Ford , there are times when the products i have can cause a line shut down if not del on time. They dont stock pile parts like they did before then use till gone.

someone, somewhere, somehow, sometime, must have swapped

I have never known one of these axles to break, the 30 spline flanged. I have seen the axles ruined due to bad/spun axle bearing, but have never seen a broken one.
    Anyone ?????

My '70 has a flanged. Produced August or September '69 IIRC (its not here at home to look). Have another flanged one in the "axle pile"

    I have a '69 centered D44 with a 3.73 Powerloc. Hopefully the splines match for a transplant!

Thanks for the info. I figured it did not have the right axle in it. Is there anyway to put the 30 spline flanged axles in my housing? Does anyone make offset axles for this?
