Been thinking about mounting a metal ammo can (30 or 50 cal) in the jeep for tools and parts when on the trail in our '63 CJ5.

Just wondering how you folks carry spare parts and tools.

    Thanks

FWIW resist bolting stuff down right away. Be absolutely sure things are where you want them so you don't end up with holes in the body that are unnecessary or are just in the wrong place.

Probably doesn't apply, but just throwing another idea out there. When racing, tools were in an ammo can (stuffed with rags to prevent rattles), but I'd duct tape spare driveshafts, quarts of oil, tie rod ends, etc,... to the roll cage and have a knife in my pocket to cut the tape for quick access. My race-jeeps were usually street legal, and I never bothered removing the spare parts after the race. I liked having them accessible and rattle-free on the trail too.

Interesting, when I first started driving jeeps I ended up carrying a bunch of spare parts in a Rubbermaid bin. Items like hoses, belts, fuel pump etc.

Most of the stuff I carry is for other people, tow straps, jumper cables, four way lug wrench, a jack, and small tools. They all fit in the tool box under the seat. I hope I never need them. I carry towels, water and a rug to cover the seats, for the dog. Enjoy your Jeep, they are fun to have.

I too have been trying to come up with a good place to safely store stuff. Where I live, it needs to be locked up. I found a nice tool box at a thrift store that I planned to mount on my trailer for the same thing (straps, tools, etc.). Since I plan to trailer my Jeep, I was thinking of welding a 2" piece of square tubing to the tool box that would slide into a standard hitch receiver. On trails, the tool box would be on the rear of the Jeep, secured with a locking pin. When not on trails, it would be in a receiver that I have mounted to the front of my trailer.

If your Jeep doesn't have a heater, you could put a box on the firewall.

I've seen folks use 4" PVC with caps on the ends for axle shafts. Keeps them dry. Some folks strap them to the frame rails somewhere out of the way.

May be room on an inner fender, for an ammo box or such.

Also something could be made behind the rear seat, or perhaps under it. The tailgate could be secured for theft prevention.

Here's what I fabbed up behind the number plate on my dirt bike. This is 2x4" thin wall tubing with a hinged door and rubber gasket to make it waterproof. You could stick one of these anywhere in a jeep.

On my first Jeep a 1960 D J 3, I made a 4" deep box under the rear seat about 18" by 36". I carried four rain suits and extra stuff in it. It raised the rear seat up 4" made it better for the kids to set in.

Welding rod canisters from Harbor Freight are commonly used in the Dual Sport arena... You could always strap some to the roll bar.
