But I put it in low range 2WD all the time at our ranch because I don't need 4WD. Meaning I take it out of overdrive without shifting into 4WD. Hope that makes sense.

We need a picture. Something is getting lost in translation.

Crawl under your jeep, point the camera up at the back of the T-case and shoot.

Let's start with the basics. Does the back of your transfer case look like this?

Or does it have something resembling this?

Can we have a pic of your shifters where they come up through the floor?

    I think...
Overdrive is being consided hi-low rather than direct (low ref) and OD (high / 1:0.75 drive).

With a transmission lever, an OD lever and a single Transfer case lever which also provides additional low range, with locking hubs turned out, would be considered 2wD even though the transfer is turning the front driveline / prop shaft...

A while back, didnt we go thru some of this in an unrelated thread where @oldtime (iirc) described his principle of "ranging"?

This is plausible for sure. With a granny gear 1st, it would seem like low range. It seems as he keeps it in OD all of the time.

First time posting pictures so hopefully this works.
The first picture is 2wd high, the second is 4wd low. At least as I understand it.

    Matt,

    Also,
what part of Northern CA are you in? Pretty big area. Don't need a street, etc, but a county would certainly help... there's a few of us in and around, but some folks consider Fresno "north"... might be one of us in the area local to you where we can share stories / provide help over a pop and a sammich...

You are being fooled by the OD shifter, which is the middle shifter. Back is direct drive, shifter forward is OverDrive. It has nothing to do with 4WD. The right shifter handles that. 2WD, 4WD high, neutral, and 4WD low are the 4 positions it has. Assuming it still works the same forward is 2WD, back one notch would be 4WD high, neutral next, and all the way back would be 4WD low.
