I have a suddenly poor idle on my 59 cj5 with fhead and carter carb which first tool I grabbed was a vacuum gauge and starter fluid. Sprayed for vacuum leaks none found so I connected my vacuum gauge to the vacuum wiper line and got a reading of 15 inches vacuum at idle. Thinking I had low vacuum and only recently remembered I have a vacuum assist fuel pump ac 4693 I think. Which now I realize my manifold vacuum should be measured elsewhere. How much vacuum should a vacuum assist fuel pump create for the wipers?

Unable to locate any data, short of testing them myself, the only thing I’ve been able to come up with is that the vacuum pump should create enough vacuum to drive a good pair of wiper motors at normal speed across the power curve..

The engine vacuum alone is a function of throttle plate position. At wide open throttle, the manifold vacuum can drop to zero, such as in climbing a hill. The vacuum boost fuel pump helps.

When plowing heavy snow, the wipers can get bogged down.

I added a Vacuum Storage Canister to give a little reserve vacuum for the wipers. It has helped, but still not as powerful as electric conversion.

So when all done and said, are/would you switch to electric instead of messing with vaccume?

I added a 12V vacuum pump from a Mustang (I was told) and I have to run the wiper switch half way out or it wipes too fast. Had to make some vacuum line valve arrangements so I could use regular manifold for normal and also be able to switch on pump when needed.

I had thought about adding a vacuum canister to my jeeps but haven't yet. The swap meet is next weekend maybe I'll look for something cool to repurpose

Vacuum setup only cost me $15 bucks. Electric conversion would have cost me near $100. Besides, vacuum tank benefits both wipers.
