Can the long clutch cable on the 71 be converted to the shorter design like my 69 CJ has? Any problems with this change or things to consider when making the change? The shorter, open cable design seems more reliable.

    Thanks.

If you can source the parts, new or used, yes.
Don't know why you would want to though...
My 1 piece cable has only been on the Jeep and in use for 31 years.

I have the bellhousing, transmission and transfer case from a 71 but I don't have the 71 clutch shaft and cable. I'm contemplating putting it in my 69 that uses the short cable.

there is a advantage to the one piece cable system . less moving parts . and is not affected by frame twist

I used the one piece cable system where you have to drill a hole in the clutch arm and used a bracket mounted to the frame and transfer case. It worked great for me. On my first 2a i had the cable and tube. It would bind up when I was wheeling it.

How does the cable attach to the clutch pedal on the 71? Is the pedal attachment different from the 69? Pictures would be great if anyone has them. Also, is the clutch release fork in the bellhousing different. It seems farther away since the bell is deeper.

    Ron,

What is the distance from the centerline of the pivot to center of the cable attachment on the pedal arm? My pedal arm only has a spring attachment.

T/O fork is the same fork regardless of bell housing configuration.
The factory instruction sheet for the drilling of the cable pivot pin hole on the pedal gives dimension of 2-1/8" from the shaft centerline to pedal hole centerline.
The spring hole should measure about 3" from the factory.

Thanks for the information. Is that in the FSM? That gives me options with my build. I'm constantly impressed with the knowledge here.

I too am running the long cable from "inlinetube." Seems to work better and stretch less than the previous cable with I think was a replacement part (Omix).

You guys have made me rethink my clutch cable solution. Maybe I need to try to find, or make, all the pieces to stay with the inlinetube type cable.
