not to sound rude but have you checked the points? often what seems to be carb related is electrical.

I run a Petronix electric ignition. No more points. Don't worry about being rude.

Check your timing too, and might see if you got a vacuum leak at the base of the carb. :)

    Has it always done this?

we just want to make sure you cover your basis before spending money on potentially funner things. I wish I could answer your other question but haven't run anything but the 2G.

My carb rebuild kit came with a spacer type gasket. A little more than a quarter inch thick. Should I be using this?? I've sprayed carb cleaner all around and don't think there is a vacuum leak.

may have asked this before . have you done the fuel can ( coffee can ) test. with fuel pump line to carburetor off into can and just cranking engine . remote starter switch works best . just to make sure it's pumping enough gas

Are you sure you have good fuel flow to the carb? Common for the fuel line to be plugged with rust or detached tank liner, which will allow some fuel to get to the carb for startup, and the engine will start with full choke, and maybe run at idle, but lose power once the vehicle is in motion, and can be kept running by running half or sometimes full choke. If you suspect that this is the case, you can put a "T" in the fuel line at the carburetor and measure the fuel pressure. I chased this problem off and on for a while and ended up replacing the tank. I previously had cleaned and relined the tank but the alcohol in the fuel these days reeks havoc with fuel components. Maybe off the mark on what your problem is, but it is worth sharing this with you.

New tank and it run great when I throttle it down the road. It will run at 30 mph with the choke off just fine. It's at idle and slowing down she need to be choked to run. Most the time I have to pull and push the choke to keep it running when I come to a stop.

Yup another post about what might be able to fix your idle but not answer your question...
    1) Did you put in the pertronix? My 2g ran great with points and then much rougher with pertronix at first. The gap between the magnetic ring and sensor was not quite right. I had to shim the distributor gear and the ring on the rotor. Also some of the magnetic rings had an error and need to be flipped over.

    2) another issue I came across was with new plug wires. They had quite a bit of minor arcing that I couldnt see without all the shop lights out. Couldnt get the idle smooth. Put the old wires back on...no arcing and smooth idle

Check to see what the fuel looks like going into the carb opening. Im fighting the same problem on mine right now and last fall. The fuel is dripping in instead of being "sprayed". I can adust the idle screws in all the way and it still runs. Its getting too much gas at idle. Not sure what i did last fall to be honest, but after taking it apart and replacing the accel pump which came apart and blowing out pasages it worked good for a while. Somethings plugged up again

If you're determined to get rid of the 2G, and stick with a 2bbl carb, the Motorcraft 2100 is about your best bet. Not sure if anybody is making "off the shelf" adapters to the Dauntless intake, but you can basically fab one yourself with a hand drill and die grinder, if you needed to. The other options for carbs are the Holley 2300, or possibly a Weber (not sure which one, or what the bolt pattern looks like vs the Rochester Pattern), I'm sure one of the other guys will chime in.

I ran a 2100 on mine for a while before switching out for an Offy intake and 4bbl, and it really worked pretty well.

I just barely solved this exact same issue with the 2G on my dauntless V6 with Pertronix ignition. My problem was the idle circuit was clogged with old, bad fuel. Jeep would start and run just fine with the choke on but would stall out and die at idle.
I ended up buying a little $69 dollar supersonic cleaner from Harbor Freight at the recommendation of FOCKER. Once I got the idle circuit actually clean, the problem disappeared. Don't give up on the 2G, it's a great little carb. Check on this cutaway pic of the idle circuit I found. it's tiny and easily missed when cleaning the carb.

If you turn the idle mixture adjustment screws in or out while it's running does it make a difference? That's what tipped me off to my idle circuit being clogged...

I'm just going to throw this out there. I'm currently running a Holley 4bbl., and my last Dauntless I ended up with an Edelbrock 4bbl...., BUT, I absolutely love the 2G. Easy to tune, and when retrofitted with electric choke, they are simply wonderful carbs, in my opinion.;)

I've never had problems with the 2GS or 2CGs. Mostly just clean them up/out and set things to spec. I did spend many years dealing with SUs/Strombergs and motorcycle carbs as well.
